Who Is Responsible For The Death Of Romeo And Juliet
In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, two teenagers from two great enemies of families fall in love despite their families’ negative status. The two star-crossed lovers attempt to make their romance work with the help of other characters, but in the end, end up dying for each other in one last action of love. Though there is no direct cause for Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet’s demise, one of the characters holds the most responsibility. This character is the ever-faithful priest, Friar Laurence. Romeo initially comes to the Friar asking him to marry him to Juliet. The Friar’s original reaction was that he would absolutely not marry them. Romeo was being foolish, after all, he had just claimed to be in love with a girl named …show more content…
This was an issue because Juliet could not be married to both Romeo and Paris. She raced to the Friar, begging for a solution to her problem. He offers her a potion that will put her in a death-like sleep for 42 hours, just enough time for Romeo to come and retrieve her so they could safely run away together. At the time, the plan seemed perfect. However, he never fully thought it through. Juliet took the potion that night and was discovered “dead” the following morning by her nurse. Friar Laurence was called, and quickly tells the family to stop being sad and bring the body to the family tomb. When the Friar swore to Juliet that Romeo would be told of the potion and come to rescue her when she woke up, he unintentionally made a false promise. Instead of sending the letter himself, he chose to rely on a fellow priest named Father John. Unfortunately for them, this messenger was sick at the time and was unable to get the letter to Romeo in time. The all important letter never made it into Romeo’s …show more content…
Distraught, he raced back to the tomb hoping to see her one last time. When he makes it back to Verona, he makes a quick stop to an apothecary, where he pays the man to give him the most deadly poison he carries. After he breaks into the tomb, he runs to Juliet’s body. He cannot see that she is indeed still alive, and still believes her to be dead. As he is mourning, Paris appears, also intending to see the girl who would have been his bride. The two exchange some words, and have a quick fight in which Romeo ends up killing Paris. Romeo then drinks all of the poison, and in a matter of seconds lies dead next to Juliet. Since Juliet only took a sleeping draught, she wakes up to find her dead lover and dead Paris by her side. She immediately breaks down just as the Friar comes charging in. He notices the bodies and the weeping Juliet. Suddenly, voices and footsteps can be heard from inside the tomb. He tries to pull Juliet out of the tomb and out of harm's way, but she refuses to leave. Friar Laurence is forced to leave without her. She notices the poison, and attempts to drink it, but it is empty. Then she found Romeo’s dagger, and to be with him forever, she stabs herself and

To explain this further, Romeo was banished due to killing Tybalt. Since Juliet did not want to marry Paris, she and Friar had the idea of getting a potion that would pretend to kill Juliet. “To rid her from this second marriage / or in my cell there she would kill herself” (5.3.241-242). In this quote, Friar explains that he felt he was bound to help her, or she would have ended her life anyway. In the letter to Romeo it indicates what the plan was for the two. The letter meant life-and-death for both Romeo and Juliet. However, Friar did not tell Friar John who was to deliver the letter to him, that it was urgent. The Black Death was a threat, so Friar John did not think it was that big of a deal if he did not get the letter. He explains to Friar Lawrence, “Suspecting that we both were in a house / where the infectious pestilence did reign” (5.2.9-10). If Friar Lawrence told him that the letter was urgent, then Romeo most likely would have gotten it, and Romeo and Juliet would have not died tragically. Friar Lawrence should have come up with a better plan to let Romeo know what was…

But since the letter never made it to Romeo because the friar was suspected “sick” he couldn’t come into Verona, therefor he couldn’t get the letter to Romeo. I think the nurse went and told the guards that the friar was sick because she had made it clear she didn’t want Juliet to be with Romeo any more instead she wanted Juliet to be with Paris, only because Romeo fought tybalt and Romeo won, tybalt then died after being stabbed with Romeos sword. So the nurse could have set it all up knowing Juliet wasn’t really dead she was only asleep hoping Romeo thought she was dead just like every one else, hoping Romeo would kill himself to be with Juliet, which in fact he did just before Juliet awoke looking for him in the dark family…

He kneels down beside her, talks to her, and tells her that he is going to kill himself because he wishes to always be with her. If Romeo and been thinking straight he would have noticed and then realized she was actually alive. He says “Death, that hath sucked the honey of thy breath, Hath had no power yet upon thy beauty. Thou art not conquered. Beauty’s ensign yet Is crimson in thy lips and in thy cheeks, And death’s pale flag is not advanced there.” (5.3.100-105). Then he goes on to say “Why art thou yet so fair? Shall I believe That unsubstantial death is amorous, And that the lean abhorred monster keeps Thee here in dark to be his paramour?” (5.3.112-114). He obviously notices that something is off about her looking so not dead. But he isn’t thinking so of course he doesn’t realize that she is still alive. So he drinks a bottle of poison and slides to ground dead. Minutes later Juliet wakes up. She sees Romeo’s corpse and bursts into tears. Instead of fleeing with Friar Lawrence she chooses to kill herself because she cannot live without him. There is no poison left in the bottle or enough left on his lips, so she takes Romeo’s knife and stabs herself through the…

Not wanting that to happen to Juliet, Friar then comes up with a plan to have Juliet drink a potion that night before the wedding that will make her in a death like state and make her to sleep for 42 hours. That way the Capulets would believe she is dead and gone for good; to then put her in the Capulet Vault with all the other corpses of their family tree. Then Friar would send a messenger to Romeo about how Juliet isn’t dead and that he needs to rescue her that night when the potion is about to wear off so they can live together in secret at Mantua. Juliet believes this is a wonderful and somewhat risky plan, but she would do anything to be with her beloved Romeo; she then drinks the concoction and the plan is set in place. Friar Laurence then sends Friar John to send the message to Romeo but he fails to deliver it before Romeo’s servant Balthasar who tells him ( according to what he saw) that “... she is well, and nothing can be ill.…
