There are so many things wrong with this character; it’s difficult to decide where to begin. For starters, his name is Sandy; a name that is considered to be feminine judging by all the iconic female actresses that go by that namesake. Continuing with his supposed faults, I would like to draw attention to the fact that he collects china dolls for a hobby. Thinking back to the week 7 lecture, I recall one of the examples of challenging hegemonic masculinity being a little boy playing with dolls. That had been my top choice for most challenging of masculinity so upon discovering that Sandy was a man who liked to collect dolls, I felt it was very contradictory. In the show, Quinn the cheerleader is captain of the Celibacy Club, so the fact that she got pregnant and it was out of wedlock as well as someone that she was not in a committed relationship with contradicts the expectations of society. Normally, in American society, we tend to be very protective of our teenage daughters and we don’t condone any type of sexual behavior. In the article, Getting Beyond “It Just Happened”, the author mentions how a father was speaking about his sixteen year old son and how he was a “ladies man” but when speaking about his daughter he sees her as an innocent and vulnerable creature that should be admired from afar but never touched. (Tolman Page 4 2002) So essentially, women are to be admired but when it comes to any sexual relations, then it is not permitted, at least not to the extent of the actual sex.
