How Does Advertising Affect Body Image Successful?
Body image is a definite part of American culture. Women want to have the perfect skinny bodies for swimsuit season and men want the chiseled abs of a minor Greek god. These standards are what everyone is supposed to strive for, that to look and feel good, people must abide by them. At least that is what advertisers attempt to make consumers think. Their attempt is a very successful one too. Unrealistic body images placed in advertisements have made many Americans develop unreasonable body ideals in their heads. Which has brought about unhealthy mental and physical side effects, hurting men and women alike of all ages. The Truth in Advertising Act of 2014 proposed by the Honorable Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is designed to help combat this problem. She believes that modifying advertisements and media to an unattainable standard is wrong and I completely agree with her legislation to help improve lives.

The strategy will revolve around the regulatory opinions of diversely picked experts by the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health and the Administrator of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The opinions will be as unbiased as possible to determine is a piece of media is truly harmful. Which will help reign in what Companies can and cannot do to influence consumers. Ms. Ros-Lehtinen is not the only person who understands there needs to be a change. The American Medical Association back in 2011 worked with both the public and private sector to implement guidelines for advertisements in regards to how they affect

    Eleven million women in the United States suffer from eating disorders- either self-induced semi-starvation (anorexia nervosa) or a cycle of bingeing and purging with laxatives, self-induced vomiting, or excessive exercise (bulimia nervosa) (Dunn, 1992). Many eating disorder specialists agree that chronic dieting is a direct consequence of the social pressure on American females to achieve a nearly impossible thinness. The media has been denounced for upholding and perhaps even creating the emaciated standard of beauty by which females are taught from childhood to judge the worth of their own bodies (Stephens & Hill, 1994). To explore the broader context of this controversial issue, this paper draws upon several aspects on how the media influences young women's body image. This paper examines an exploration of the prevalence and the source of body dissatisfaction in American females and considers existing research that presents several important aspects regarding the nature of the connection between advertising and body dissatisfaction.
