How Does Arthur Miller Present John Proctor In The Crucible
Arthur Miller the author of The Crucible introduces John Proctor in a very interesting way. The first scene with Proctor and Abigail, gave the reader a wrong impression about Proctor and Abigail’s relationship. “Proctor: Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time…..We never touched, Abby. Abigail: Aye, but we did. Proctor: Aye, but we did not.” (Miller, 23). It seems that Proctor does not want to face the truth that him and Abigail had a very strong relationship. Having this type of scene to introduce a character that way, foreshadows that this character is very much troubled and will cause trouble further in the play. However, when Miller introduces Reverend Hale and Giles Corey, he introduces them in a very positive image, unlike
Proctor. Throughout the beginning of act one, Reverend Parris would always mention that Reverend Hale had the true medicine that is going to heal Betty, his daughter, from any kind of sickness that she might have. “Tell him I sent for Reverend Hale of Beverly, and Mr. Hale will surely confirm that.” (Miller, 9). Also, at the end of act one, the reader is convinced that Hale has solved the mystery of the Devil being in control in all of these girls. Miller shows that Hale is a good man because he saves the day at the end. Giles Corey was also introduced in a normal and positive image. Corey seems to be worried abou Betty, just like everybody else was. Corey seems to be a fair man, and he also so seems to know the laws of Salem. “You are allowed six pound a year to buy your wood, Mr. Parris.” (Miller,29). Corey also seems to worry about his village, Salem, from witchcraft and such things. Corey seems to be the calming one in the family. Miller introduces Proctor that caught the audience by surprise, but not as much with Reverend Hale and Giles Corey. Giving that image about Proctor foreshadows that he might be the main conflict of play and may change or may even twist the story and he might return to Abigail.
