He doesn't want to forget, "Suddenly, I was furious at myself and all those who were smirking at him. I jumped up and shouted. 'Shut up! Leave him alone! It's not his fault he can't understand! He can't help what he is! But for God's sake...he's still a human being!" (Page 15). This quote shows that he doesn't want to forget and that his past helped move along his understanding of intelligence. This quote showed Charlie that the smart looked down at the dumb. And most of all he hated himself for laughing at the boy, "Only a short time ago, I learned that people laughed at me. Now I can see that unknowingly I joined with them in laughing at myself" (Page 15). He did the one thing he thought he would never do, and he did it. He laughed at someone who didn't even know they were being laughed at. This changed his understanding of
