How Does Edgar Allan Poe Use Of Deterioration In The Black Cat

Josh Larsen Ms. Geraets English III Composition 4/24/2021 PR 85% “The Black Cat” Edgar Allan Poe once said, “There is something in the unselfish and self-sacrificing love of a brute,”(Poe, 3/4) Edgar Allan Poe uses a variety of techniques to show his self-deterioration and his abuse of the animals he loves through use of imagery, character, and tone. Edgar Allan Poe’s use of imagery creates a horrific picture in the reader's mind of what is happening to these animals and to himself. When Poe finally begins to feel the effects of his drinking, he uses imagery to tell the reader exactly how he feels. “The fury of a demon instantly possessed me. I knew myself longer than I knew. My original soul seemed, at once, to take its flight from my body”(Poe, 5.) He uses words like demon, and possessed, to show how he has lost control. That the demon could be symbolic of the

This gives us a look at the constant battle he fights with himself, the mad side of him and the side that keeps its morality and temper. “Once again I breathed like a free man. The monster, in terror, fled the premises forever! I should behold it no more! My happiness was supreme!” (Poe, 13.) It is revealed here that he has finally been able to rid himself from the demon in him; he is finally able to feel happiness and joy where there had been fear and torment. This shows a growth in the character as he isn’t a man that is completely tortured by his contradicting personalities, he is instead able to rid himself of it for a time in which he can feel peace and gleam with joy. Poe has a tone in this story that gives off fear and feelings that the character experiences. Poe uses the tone to make it as though the character is scared of himself. “The fury of a demon instantly possessed me. I knew myself longer than I knew. My original soul seemed, at once, to take its flight from my body” (Poe, 5). Using words like demon, and possessed, it sounds like he knows what he is
