In the play Medea written by Euripides, the patriarchal society of ancient Greece is examined and the role of women in a male centred society is explored. In this world where “the middle way,” or moderation in all things is valued and reason and logic are seen to be the ideal, there is no room for passion or emotion which further limits the value of women. In response to Jason’s arrogant sense of superiority and his disregard for his wife’s feelings, Medea shows criminal behaviour by killing Jasons children and his new wife so he cannot continue his family line and denying him burial rights for his own children. When Medea points out that women, especially "foreign" women, "require some knowledge of magic and other covert arts to exert influence over their husbands in the bedroom," she argues for a kind of alternative power that women can enjoy. A power that remains invisible to men and unknown by society, yet sways each with unquestionable force. As abnormal as it seems, the readers of Euripides’ Medea witnesses this scene at the beginning of the book. The Nurse and Chorus continually speak about the hardships Medea is going through, and tend to feel sorry for her. Euripides emphasizes the point that Medea is going through extreme pain internally with the thought and actions of her killing her own children. In “Medea” by Euripides, Medea end up committing filicide. At the end of the play she kills both of her children. She claims that she does it to prevent their humiliation and her being embarrassed by her peers. I’ve learned that in most cases the mother is the one who commits filicide. That makes sense to me that it is more likely for Medea to kill the kids than Jason. I learned that in most cases of filicide the child is under six years old. In the play Medea specifically mentions her children’s future. She think about how much they could’ve done with their live because they are so young. Medea breaks one of the common points of filicide because of the reasoning behind killing her kids. She doesn’t kill them because of gender or financial problems like most parents do. I see this as another way that Medea breaks social norms. I have learned in the presentations that many parents that commit filicide have had frequent depression. Clearly this is a reason behind why Medea does what she does. She has had a very traumatic experience with Jason and it has affected her decisions. She is in an unstable state and I think she is crazy to get to the point of killing her kids. Which leads to the fact that in about 85% of filicide cases the murderer has psychotic traits. I have seen some of these traits in Medea already and I think that connects with the resources that talk about filicide. Although Medea connects with many of the characteristics of filicide, she breaks that point that only about 15% of the murderers have criminal histories. Medea has already killed her family and plans to kill Jason’s new wife, so this isn’t something new for her; but she is talking it to an extreme this time. At times, the chorus is an active participant in the drama; at others, it can be merely a commentator or spectator. The chorus in Medea displays qualities of both, but its central task is to pass value judgments on the behavior of individual characters--its voice stands as the arbiter of objectivity in the play, supplying us with the most normative perspective on the events as they transpire. After having expressed a general sympathy with Medea earlier, the chorus now warns her against indulging in her emotions too severely, as her turmoil, while real, is a "common thing." Medea lacks this common sense perspective. The score of advisors that counsel her to refrain from indulging in her emotions only underscores Euripides' conceit that underneath common human problems (such as marriage breakup) rest potential forces that, although normally controlled, are capable of exploding into such extraordinary catastrophes as those recounted in his play. The chorus's viewpoint, then, though the most sensible, does not fully account for Medea's situation. In Euripides’ play “Medea” the main character is a powerful, but controversial woman – Medea herself. Reading the story some people might be confused with the actions that the protagonist decides to take. She is violent, vindictive, bloody and seemingly crazy. By looking at actions alone, Medea would certainly be considered evil. However, the author creates a character decidedly more complex. We can see it through the background story of the character and development of the play’s plot.
