How Does Football Affect People's Life
In America, most people believe that the best way to make their children successful in life is for them to succeed in school, have the highest grades possible and go to the most prestigious college possible. Parents tend to concentrate on just the academics for the sake of their children however they completely ignore the extracurricular side for children such as sports. Participating in sports brings out more than just staying active it builds character in them that will carry on beyond the sport and into their life. To some students primarily in high school, sports are seen as a way out for them which can lead to a career. Also sports can provide to serve as a second family to those who lack stability or a proper parent figure at home. All …show more content…
In my first year of football, I noticed there were a number of my teammates that were spending additional time to football than the rest of the time. Before and after practice they would be applying themselves in order to get college offers. They would be working on themselves physically and mentally depending on where their weaknesses were. I found out that football was the only way that some of my teammates could go to college their families didn’t have the income to send their kids to college. I know what the counter-argument for this is “with all the time they spend on football they could be using that time to focus on school work” This is not true my teammates that ended up earning a football scholarship had high GPA’s and were part of National Honors Society which is a program filled with honor students. With the bad rep that high school sports are getting like, football is seen as a waste of time when that's not the case to some it's their ticket out. One other thing to consider that not many people can understand is that for some athletes the sport they are a part of is what makes them who they

Education needs to be placed on the forefront, while athletics should come after, regardless of how good the athlete may be in his or her choice of sport. Unfortunately, this is a drawback for some athletes – having to maintain their eligibility. Some students maintain great grades during high school and possibly are awarded a scholarship to a school of higher learning so to speak. When all too often, the only reason they are awarded to go there is to play the sport they excel in. These actions can and will play an important part in the athlete’s future, if they do not have a back-up plan in academics. I remember not too long ago, a few high school graduates that were awarded scholarships to college to play football. I had asked one of the students what study they were majoring in. They said to me they did not know, they were going to be in home economics course to start. I think all too often, some colleges focus on the person as a whole. With this continually happening year after year, one would have to ask themselves how smart the children are in our society, or does it even matter as long as they can throw the ball seventy…

Athletics is ingrained in the human experience and is an integral part of American culture. Because of that, many of my weekends and after school hours have been dedicated to either watching a game or starting one with the kids in the neighborhood. Athletics runs deep in my family. My great uncle was a professional baseball player and my family, including my father, three brothers and a sister, are all very involved with the various team sports. It’s this immersion into various sporting activities that has led me to the understanding that engaging in athletics has a very positive impact in our lives. Additionally, sports are extremely important in building one’s character through hard work, learning to work with others on a team and by learning how to cope with the joy of winning and the inevitability of losing.…

In the article, “Should Kids Play Football” by Jennifer Shotz it states. “When playing football young athletes learn discipline, focus, teamwork-skills, and life skills, that will help them after football.” Football players in the NFL go through one long and grueling season after another, and that could put a lot of stress on them and make them more prone to injury. But sometimes it all pays off in the end when you get that full ride (scholarship) to the college of your dreams, and then get that five million dollar rookie contract “Football gives out the most scholarships each recruiting season..” But dreams are dreams and the chances of getting a scholarship are very slim even with all the scholarships being handed…

Many people fail to realize that college athletes give most of their time to the sport that gave them a scholarship. They have time built in their schedule just for classes and study hall. Woodrow states, “success in graduating athletes then constitutes supporting evidence” (paragraph 4). He also states, “the success or lack thereof is universally measured by comparing athlete graduation rates to general student body rates (paragraph 4). There really shouldn’t be a comparison between the two because the general students have way more time to their studies than athletes. Some big time colleges have strategies on how to improve the graduation rates for athletes. Southhall states, “as part of the strategy, the NCAA strives “to ensure the academic commitment of student athletes and to increase the likelihood that they will earn degrees (paragraph 10). He also states, along these lines, in 2005 the NCAA formulated a tool called the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for Division I Schools (paragraph 10). This means that they are committed to getting degrees regardless if they are an athlete or not. Robst states, “Many feel that participation in sports inhibits students ' ability to do well in the classroom (paragraph 1). This means that people think since you participate in a sport that you can’t make the grades. Participating in sports in college and making good grades is all on the…

Ever since kicking my first soccer ball during Kinder Kicks, soccer has become a fundamental aspect of my life. Not only have I been playing the sport since then, but the sport has also influenced me beyond solely playing it. It is the culture surrounding the game as well. It is waking up early every Saturday morning to watch the Liverpool game, or getting ready to cheer on the New England Revolution in Gillette Stadium in the evenings. Soccer has been embedded everywhere in my life, from the posters on my bedroom walls to the jerseys that continue to accumulate on my closet floor. This passion has driven me to share the sport with as many as I can. With the Natick Soccer Organization, I have been organizing tournaments for U10 and U14 boys…

Being a college athlete myself, I have lived the struggle of trying to maintain grades, while going to practice and games during the week. Imagine trying to keep a job during this hectic schedule. It is hard for college athletes to find extra money to get a pizza or go see a movie. It is especially hard for athletes coming from tough backgrounds. Two out of every five Division I athletes come from single parent homes and athletics are their only opportunity to provide a future for themselves and their families. It is not easy for these students to get jobs because their schedules are already full. For example, many division I football teams practice twice a day. A day for a division I football player could look like this: practice-6 a.m., class-9 a.m., class-11 a.m., and practice-2 a.m. By the time they are done with the second practice of the day their day is practically over. They still have to eat dinner and possibly do homework. This leaves no time to get even a part-time job. It also raises the question of how these athletes obtain extra spending money? If you are an athlete like Johnny Manziel, who…

According to “The Value of Sports,” athletes are able to set better long time goals and strive for them, vs non-athletes, (2). Athletes who play sports are more focused in school, they are more motivated, and they learn skills that may improve their life in the future. There is a rule called No Pass No Play, which means if you don’t pass a class in school, you can’t play a sport (No Pass, no play law affects many students throughout Texas) (1). This rule is effective in states like Texas. Americans should be for students without passing grades being able to play sports, because students in clubs are not affected, and the youth of America needs the teachings and values that sports are able to bring. Athletes in school tend to do better in school…

Student-Athletes who are recruited to play a college sport are going in with one goal, to play their sport professionally by being the best player they can be. Unfortunately only about 3% percent of NCAA athletes in their respective sport go on to play professionally. The other 97% spend hours and hours of their precious time practicing on the field all for no future in that specific field of work. Actually according to Forbes, Marc Edelman reports “student-athletes work 3 and a half more hours a week than a typical american worker”(Forbes) If an NCAA athlete spends over 40 hours a week practicing their game, then they are working the same amount of hours as people who are in full employment. These hours are spanned over practices, training, games traveling, attending classes, and maintaining grades which is important in order to remain on the team and keep their full scholarship. For people that complain about their jobs and only have to work less than 40 hours a week, think about a student athlete whose job is not only intellectually demanding but brings them to the limits of their physical endurance as…

Nearly 65% of children say they participate in sports to be with their friends (Statistic Brain). Sports were established so that the individual could not only exercise, but also to compete against a rival. Just as there are individual sports, there are team sports in high school. The idea of a team sport is that every single person on the field or court must work in unison to have the greatest opportunity to win. In addition to the increasing popularity of sports, the average child’s age when they join a team is decreasing. For example, the age that a child joins a basketball team has shifted from fourth grade to first grade or even kindergarten in the past decade. School is the primary factor when you review the participation in athletics,…

Student athletes should appreciate and take full advantage of the opportunity they have to do what they love and to get education for a reduced amount or even for free. In the article “College Athletes Should Not Be Paid Because a College Education is valuable.” James Shulman says that college athletes tend to not to do as well as their classmates in the classroom. Which shows that these students are not take full advantage of what they have the opportunity to do. This shows that people who play sports in college generally care more about their sports career more than their academic…

One reason high school sports aren’t beneficial is because they create a lot of pressure. According to the video “Do Athletes Face Unnecessary Parent Pressure?” by KCRA, sports are sometimes the only way students can get into a good college and be able afford it. This puts a lot of pressure on the athletes to perform at their best 100% of the time. Experts say that your child's entire team will suffer if the parents are pressuring their kids (KCRA.com, “Do Athletes Face Unnecessary Parent Pressure?” ). This fact is important because it proves, when parents put pressure on their children it does not benefit them, in fact it is actually setting them up for life in an unhealthy way. This shows that the pressure from sports is not good and not worth it.…

Athletes have to be dedicated to the game they play. Dedication means something different to each person; it is how the person responds to adversity that makes all the difference for when they play again. When student athletes have to practice they must be committed to their sport. This means student athletes must make their sport their second full time job, their first full time job is their schooling. Division 1 football players spend 43.3 hours a week practicing, and basketball players spend 39 hours a week practicing. All of the dedication goes unnoticed, however all of the university employees and school programs make money off of the student athletes hard work and dedication. All college athletes should be paid a portion of all revenues, which can accumulate over a billion dollars that are either donated by boosters, merchandise sold, ticket sales, and TV franchising.…
