Change is a process that can be seen differently by many people- some loving it, and others loathing. More often than not, change is a good thing for people to experience, for it can possibly make them better people. Many characters in Great Expectations have to experience and deal with change as well, such as Pip. Independence is a change most people have to experience in their lives, and helps shape them into more mature, better people. Pip has to be independent for the majority of the book, and the experience impacts him positively. In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, the character Philip Pirrip, better known as Pip, is used to present the theme of how experiencing independence can change someone for the better.

Despite their initial dispute, Herbert and Pip have become rather close and Herbert decided that he was going to teach Pip how to be a gentleman- just as Pip had hoped. Herbert invites Pip to many places, teaching him different mannerisms along the way. Pip is taught various things he had never heard of, such as, “quote about exactly that” (Dickens #). This quote gives readers some background as to what Herbert taught Pip when he was in London, and how confused Pip was about it all at first, having never been taught such things before. As Pip gets older and starts spending more time in London, he starts becoming more independent and he eventually doesn't have to rely on Herbert anymore. He meets new people in London, such as Wemmick and Jaggers, and they also help him become a respectful gentleman- contrary to Pip’s preconceived notions of what a “gentleman” was. Pip has to deal with many difficult issues on his own in London, all of which shape him into a respectable young man.
