12 January 2010 The Hamlet Question For a man to get avenge on his father’s murderer takes much strength and courage, but not necessarily time. In the tragedy, Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Hamlet waits five acts to kill his father’s murderer, Claudius. Critics have come up with two types of reasons for the long delay, one reason being internal and the other external. The internal reasons being, Hamlet was too weak, he thought too much, and he was too religious. The external reasons being Claudius was heavily guarded and he was not sure if the ghost that gave him the orders to kill Claudius was actually his father. Every critic explains his view thoroughly. Herman Ulrici believes that Hamlet delays killing Claudius because he is too religious. Characteristically speaking Hamlet is a philosophical being, he is very capable in succeeding in his revenge but his religious views stop him from doing so. “Even though the King were trebly a fratricide, [someone who kills their own brother or sister] in a

To prove this Goethe describes the events taking place before the “pep talk.” His weakness could have been brought on by the fact that his father had died suddenly and soon after his mother marrying his uncle. “ Goethe’s portrayal of Hamlet as a “lovely, pure, noble, and highly moral being who lacks the hero’s strength to avenge his father’s murder.” (Goethe 91) Shakespeare gave Hamlet this “great duty” because he knew that since he has such a faulty characteristic, it would take a great deal and will power to overcome it. “The time is out of joint---O cursed spite, That ever I was born to set it right!” (Shakespeare 1.5.210-211) Hamlet curses that fact that he has to go through with his father’s ghost’s request because he does not think he has potential to do

Hamlet, having suffered a sudden of death of a loved one, had to watch the marriage of his mother “with wicked speed” to his uncle, Claudius (Shakespeare 31). Grief stricken and “taking (his mother’s actions) to heart”, it would make sense that the sarcastic Hamlet coped with his feelings through acting without care (Shakespeare 27). Horatio, Hamlet’s friend “from Wittenberg,” would have a genuine relationship with Hamlet, demonstrated by how he decided to tell him about the ghost at all and his loyalty throughout the entire play (Shakespeare 31). Knowing Hamlet for a while, Horatio would be understanding of Hamlet’s method of grieving, but would be annoyed at the lack of interest of what he has to say, since he knows how important it is. Hamlet,…

Hamlet himself does not know why he procrastinates the murder when he has "the means motive and opportunity"(4.4.2833-2835). But I think Hamlet hesitates to kill Claudius for religious reasons. The audience witnesses Hamlet admitting that he wants Claudius to go to hell, and that is the reason Hamlet hesitates to kill Claudius when he is praying (3.3.2375):…

For many readers, hamlet remains an imaginative work which has been called a “great poetical puzzle”. Hamlet has caused more discussion than any other character in fiction, dramatic or non-dramatic. Many have been disturbed by what have been called: the two Hamlet in the play”. 1- The true sensitive young intellectual and idealist; the sweet prince, who expresses himself in unforgettable poetry. 2- The other, a barbaric who treats Ophelia cruelty and kills Polonius. Hamlet, a tragic hero who has a clear and sacred obligation to kill Claudius and to do so without delay; the basic question then is: why does so much time elapse before revenge?…

Although Hamlet is characterized as relatively rational in his acts, he nonetheless still possess a strong desire to enact just vengeance on those who have wronged him. While Hamlet arrives at a propitious opportunity to kill Claudius in Act III, while the unknowing murderer sits in prayer while Hamlet, dagger in hand, watches, he ultimately chooses not to, postponing the act until his uncle “is drunk asleep, or in his rage / Or in th' incestuous pleasure of his bed / At game a-swearing, or about some act / That has no relish of salvation in ’t” (III.iii.90-94). Hamlet wishes not only for his uncle to pay the ultimate price for his sins – his life – he wants Claudius to suffer in eternal damnation, reflecting the intensity of Hamlet’s feeling (Bloom 20). Only now do audiences realize the full extent to which Hamlet wishes for vengeance. Even among Hamlet’s wit and the guise of his “antic disposition”, passion and hatred…

Based on these examples, Hamlet’s demeanor allowed him to easily kill multiple people without regard or remorse and thus he should not have hesitated in killing Claudius, a person who killed his Father and married his Mother. However, this is not the case, despite his promises to get his revenge “with wings as swift as meditation or the thoughts of love” (Hamlet.1.5.29-30). This same idea was mentioned by Sigmund Freud in “The Interpretation of Dreams” when he states “The plot of the drama, however, shows us that Hamlet is by no means intended to appear as a character wholly incapable of action… What is it, then, that inhibits him in accomplishing the task which his father's ghost has laid upon him?” (Freud, page 86). Additionally, Jones noted that “there is every reason to believe that, apart from the task in question, Hamlet is a man capable of very decisive action” (Jones 77). These quotes further support my opinions that Hamlet acts decisively when it comes to taking the lives of others, as such, he hesitance to kill Claudius must related to a deeper…

The Hamlet question is essentially why it took Hamlet so long to kill his uncle. Many critics debated whether or not Hamlet could actually do it. Most critics, such as Goethe, Ulricci, and Schlegel, listed internal factors to why Hamlet kept delaying killing his uncle. Goethe has several internal reasons to why Hamlet took so long to kill his uncle. Schlegel calls Hamlet weak-willed and charges him with the natural inclination for artifice and dissimulation. Ulricci listed that Hamlet’s faith is to blame for the delay. Others, like Klein and Werder, say that Hamlet’s delay came about from external factors. Werder explains that in his theory Hamlet’s delay comes from Hamlet himself. But both external and internal factors are questioned by Robert R. Reed Jr. Reed has his only theory to why Hamlet took so long.…

One reason that Hamlet was hesitant to kill Claudius is because he is part of his family. He was first Hamlet’s uncle before his father was killed. After King Hamlet was dead, Claudius married Gertrude and became Hamlet’s dad. This situation would be very difficult for Hamlet, because he is very angry about his father’s death and how his mother married Claudius so soon after. Even though he is angry, however, he can see that…

William Shakespeare, in the play Hamlet, goes deep into the psychological afflictions of a man whose mother marries his uncle, who has murdered his father. The ghost of Hamlet’s father appears before Hamlet to tell him who his murderer is, and to make certain that Hamlet will avenge his death. However, Hamlet does not immediately seek revenge. His reason for his delay in seeking revenge is that he is waiting for an opportune moment to strike. However, Hamlet's stalling to seek revenge drives him almost insane. It should be pondered upon; what is the actual reason for Hamlet's delay in punishing his uncle. His tendency to reflect detains his ability to act, he does not come out of his thinking rather goes deeper into it and this is proven to be true by the action in the play. Hamlet spends almost all of his time thinking. A great deal of his narrative, sounds, more like speeches, as if he is speaking to himself, or his own mind. Many of these speeches are soliloquies, however, even when he is speaking to someone else, it sounds as if he is reflecting upon matters in his own mind.…

One of the major themes in Hamlet is the reason behind his delay for revenge. Throughout the play, the prince of Denmark is presented with many opportunities to kill his father's murderer Claudius but there was always something holding him back. There are different theories of why Hamlet may find it difficult to execute the ghost’s request. It could be said that Hamlet fears the consequence of killing a king, which at that time was considered a mortal sin, or he simply didn't want to hurt his mother Gertrude by killing her new lover, or as some may think, he is too sensitive a soul to be able to commit an act of violence. By carefully reviewing the play, the readers may find yet another, more believable explanation such as that Hamlet is simply over thinking the situation and his indecision is causing him to miss all these opportunities for revenge. In Act III Scene I he himself gives voice to this theory by saying: “Thus conscience does make cowards of us all.” His intelligence may truly be the cause of his inability to act and defend his family’s honor. The first clue of this is Hamlet’s doubt of the true intensions of the ghost. In order to assure himself that the ghost’s story is true, the prince plots a…

At this point, Hamlet has concluded to carry out an act of vengeance.
