Drake, one of the most popular musical artists of our time, once said, “I want to take it deeper than money, girls, vacation, and influence a generation that's lacking in patience.” It’s very easy to fall under the media’s preconception of how Hip Hop only touches on materialistic items, violent behavior, and substance abuse. Many sports athletes use Hip Hop as a way to inspire them to keep moving along their path. Hip Hop is very popular with pump up music for workouts, during practices, and before practices as well. Positive songs such as Alright by Kendrick Lamar provide a positive message that it’s listeners will be alright in the end. The majority of Hip Hop expresses the journey an artist has from a tough upbringing to current day. Consequently, Hip Hop is usually the music of the “underdog”, and is very motivational. Tupac, one of the most influential people of the 1990s, once said in his song “No matter how hard it gets, stick your chest out, keep your head up, and handle it”
In addition to Hip Hop spreading hope and inspiration, it also broadcasts social awareness to all of its listeners. Protesters use Kendrick Lamar’s Alright as their chant against police harassment. Artists such as Rihanna, Drake did not show up to the Grammy’s Award Show, in a small protest against Award Show’s favoritism against Hip Hop artists.
