For example, I currently work as a member of the kitchen staff at Chicago Connection in downtown Boise. Four nights a week, I show up at the time that has been assigned to me and punch a number into a computer to start the clock, to be paid $7.50 an hour for my time there. I go to the back and put on an apron and begin my task of pressing dough. I press the dough and run it through a rolling machine and then put it in a pan. I pass the pan on to someone else who adds toppings and I start my dough pressing process over again. Meanwhile the kitchen is filled with loud rock music and you can’t hear over it to talk to the person next to you because the kitchen is a “talk free” zone. The kitchen is set up in a hierarchal manner where if you do well you can move up from the “dough” to “toppings” to “oven” to “wait staff”. The wait staff makes tips and therefore everyone in the kitchen wants to work up to that
