How Does Lennie Represent Death In Of Mice And Men
So in the book Of Mice and Men it follows two men named George and Lennie. George and Lennie are best friends and they dream of owning a small farm together. Lennie wants to take care of the rabbits if they get get any. Lennie always asks “Will I be able to tend the rabbits?” (Steinbeck,56).They end up working on a ranch and they both stick out. That’s when most of their troubles started.
Lennie is a grown man with a mental disability.”Give it here”(Steinbeck,6). He acts like he is 6 or 7 years old. But he isn’t weak.”No,he ain’t,but he sure is one hell of a good worker.Strong as a bull” (Steinbeck,22). Lennie represents death/bad guy in this book even though he doesn’t know what it is. People always tell him bad things and he believes it or doesn’t want to believe it and ends up threatening the person. “Jump in the river Lennie”(Steinbeck,40). Lennie also does whatever george tells him to do. So if George tells him to kill someone, Lennie won’t hesitate and go and do it with no mercy.
“She Purty” (Steinbeck,32). Lennie is interested in Curleys wife and she isn’t the nicest person. He is easily convinced as George explained to slim in the book. So lennie could’ve been listening to the things curleys wife said. She was his first “love” and that could’ve been a reason he snapped. But again, even though he “loved” her he ended up killing her at the end. Then after that he ran and started going crazy.”I tried aunt clara ma’am” (Steinbeck,101).
These are the reasons why Lennie represents death and/or the bad guy of the book.He kills mostly everything he touches.He ended up killing a person.He’s really convinced and believes mostly everything he hears.He falls in love with someone that has a big ego and doesn’t show respect to anyone. Lennie in my opinion is considered the bad guy of the book even though he’s supposed to be shown as a good
