How Does Light Intensity Affect The Rate Of Photosynthesis
For this experiment I am investigating how the light intensity as my limiting factor will have in impact on the amount to oxygen produced, to should the rate of photosynthesis.Therefore, all the controlled variables must remain constant, if not there could be an affect on the accuracy of the dependent variable. The CO2 levels are the same for each trial because before placing the sodium hydrogen carbonate i will weigh it with a measuring scale for 1.5 grams. After completing the five measurements for the first trial, I will change the water and add a new amount of sodium hydrogen carbonate to the water, however using the same pondweed stem. If I am able to keep the sodium hydrogen carbonate the same the results should have a similar affect, …show more content…
When the light is on there should be a beaker of water in front of the test tube(containing the pondweed) because the water in the beaker will absorb the heat coming from the light bulb. The plant will not be affected by the heat and due to my previous research it will result in faster rate of photosynthesis and plant will survive longer.
Each of my experiments will be 60 seconds long to get decent measurable results. The light source I will be using has a voltage of 35V and will have a beaker of water in front of it, and 15cm away front he end of the light bulb is a test tube with the pondweed in it. There are 5cm intervals after every experiment to show the different in the light intensity due to the distance. If I am also able to keep the room as dark as possible with the only light source coming from my light bulb the intensity will remain constant.
I predict that if I am able to keep all these variables constant though my 25 processes, I will hope to find that as I create more distance from the light source, the slower the rate of photosynthesis will be created, the closer to the light the rate of photosynthesis will increase. This experiment will test the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis in a plant called Elodea. Elodea is an easy plant to use for this experiment because it is cheap, abundant, and easy to take care of. This photosynthetic organism needs to be kept in an aerated freshwater tank. To do this experiment, put the Elodea in a beaker of freshwater. Anchor the Elodea using a small weight like a paperclip so that the plant remains in the same position and up right through the entire experiment. In between the beaker and the light bulb, there should be a separate beaker of water that is used to absorb any heat produced by the light. After the first five minutes, move the beaker containing the Elodea about ten centimeters back and let it stand for two minutes so that it can adjust to the new intensity of the light.
