Testing Carbon Dioxide
Done by: Krish S.
AIM: is to plan and carry out an investigation on factors affecting the rate of photosynthesis. We are doing this by investigating the amount of bubbles produced by waterweed to show the rate of photosynthesis and the effects of carbon dioxide (CO2).
HYPOTHESIS: I think that the rate of photosynthesis will increase as the rate of CO2 increases this can be seen by the bubbles produced from the plant because CO2 is needed for photosynthesis.
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE: Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
DEPENDENT VARIABLE: Number of bubbles produced
CONTROLLED VARIABLE: the same plant, the same amount of light and the same amount of time
MATERIALS/APPARATUS:
-Light source (light bulb)
-Beaker
-Filter funnel
-Test tube
-Pondweed (green plant)
-Ruler
-Water
-Stopwatch
METHOD: 1. Organize the equipment 2. Insert pond weed into the filter funnel 3. Put the upside down filter funnel and test tube into the beaker 4. Fill the beaker with room temperature water 5. Place the light bulb next to the light source 6. Change carbon dioxide levels 7. Wait for 30 seconds for the results 8. Re-do this process 10 times 9. Take down the results for this
RESULTS:
Test Number | Time (Seconds) | Light Intensity | CO2 Levels | Number of Bubbles | 1 | 30 | 10.0 | 1.0 | 8 | 2 | 30 | 10.0 | 2.0 | 15 | 3 | 30 | 10.0 | 3.0 | 17 | 4 | 30 | 10.0 | 4.0 | 24 | 5 | 30 | 10.0 | 5.0 | 25 | 6 | 30 | 10.0 | 6.0 | 26 | 7 | 30 | 10.0 | 7.0 | 28 | 8 | 30 | 10.0 | 8.0 | 27 | 9 | 30 | 10.0 | 9.0 | 24 | 10 | 30 | 10.0 | 10.0 | 24 |
CONCLUION AND EVALUATION:
WHAT DID YOU PREDICT BEFORE YOU BEGAN YOUR EXPERIMENT?
Before my experiment I predicted that the rate of photosynthesis will increase as the rate of carbon dioxide increases and that it could be seen from the plant as carbon dioxide is needed for photosynthesis.
