BS101 Unit 4 Short Answer Question (SAQ)
Lesson 4 Laboratory: Photosynthesis
Introduction: Elodea is a species of aquatic plant often called waterweed. Like other plants, Elodea absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen during photosynthesis.
In this lab, an Elodea specimen is submerged in water under a lamp with a filter that can change the color of the light. We will measure Elodea's rate of photosynthesis by measuring the amount of oxygen it produces. We will investigate the effects of light color and light intensity on Elodea's rate of oxygen production.
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate, Na HCO3) breaks down to release CO2 when mixed with water, so adding it to the water increases the availability of CO2.By placing the Elodea plant into water containing varying levels of baking soda, we can also investigate the effect of carbon dioxide availability on the rate of photosynthesis.
Hypothesis & Prediction: A hypothesis is a testable statement that explains what will happen with a reason. A prediction is what you think will happen.

TYPE CORRECT ANSWER HERE
1. Make a prediction about which light color (red, blue, green, or colorless) will result in the highest photosynthesis rate.

Red and blue colour light will result in the highest photosynthesis rate.
The graph below shows the rate of photosynthesis versus wavelength of light incident.

The graph show that most of the photosynthesis takes place in the blue and red regions of the spectrum
2. Predict whether the rate of the photosynthesis will be highest at:
A. low intensity of light
B. medium intensity of light
C. high intensity of light
The rate of photosynthesis will be highest at high intensity of light.

The plateau indicates that after a steady increase the rate is unaffected because the chlorophyll molecules lose their excitability.
3. Based on what you already know about photosynthesis, write a testable hypothesis to explain the influence of an increase in light intensity on the photosynthetic rate in tomato leaves.

The conditions of CO2 and light that I would suggest a student to use would be blue light and having the CO2 levels at 7.5 along with the intensity of the light being at 7.5 also because this would allow the plant to intake good colours of the light spectrum and it would allow a good amount of intake of carbon dioxide and if the intensity of the light it strong than photosynthesis would move at a faster rate…

The trial that worked the best in the lab would have to be the 30cm light CO2 trial. This trial worked the best because it was the ideal environment for the leaf disks to rise. Since the light was somewhat close to the leaf disk and there was C02 present in the water the leaf disks were able to go through photosynthesis at the fastest pace with all 10 disks rising. 5. The purpose of using the water soap solution for one of the trial was for it to serve as the control trial of the lab.…

Photosynthesis is one way plants(plants are the main source of energy for all things)get energy to do things. The reactants of this are water, carbon dioxide, and although light energy is not a reactant, it is necessary once the energy from the seed is gone. Carbon Dioxide needs to be present for photosynthesis to happen. In lab 7.2, we put an elodea in one test tube, and nothing in the other. We blew into the BTB until it turned a yellow/green color, which meant it had carbon dioxide in it. We filled both…

I predict that for temperature, it will not be a case of an increase in x = an increase in y. I predict that there will be a peak where photosynthesis happens the quickest at around 40-50°C. Chlorophyll is an enzyme, therefore it requires some heat to work, but if it is overheated it stops working. Enzymes work rather like a lock and key. It is important that they are a very specific shape for their purpose (in this case chlorophyll joins…

Introduction: On the surface waters of lakes and oceans, plants are mainly unicellular algae, and most consumers are microscopic crustaceans and protozoans. Both the producers and consumers are very small, and they are easily contained in a liter of water. If you put these organisms in a bottle and turn on the lights, you get photosynthesis. If you turn off the lights, you turn off the primary production. Darkness has no effect on respiration. This is because cellular respiration is actually the reverse process of photosynthesis. Oxygen is a necessity of life requirements for basically all living organisms.*…
