The first question in the survey asked, do you feel comfortable with your body weight? The table above shows that 59% of the girls surveyed said yes, they were happy with their body weight and 41% percent said that they were unhappy with their body image.
The question then went further on and asked if the answer to the first part was no, then why? The majority of the responses to this question were that they felt that they were too fat and wanted to lose weight, with the occasional respondent saying that they thought they were too underweight. Some of the other answers included “I want to tone my body”, “I have big legs”, “I wish I was tall like a model” and “people at school tease me because I’m fat”

Question two asked, would you like to change anything? The results for this question were visibly clear. 68% of the girls surveyed said that they were happy with their body and didn’t feel the need to change anything. On the other hand the remaining 32% said that they were unhappy and would like to change some things. Some of the respondents even recorded what it was that they wanted to change. Some of these included weight, height, and skin

The term body image refers to a person's sense of satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the physical appearance of his or her body (“Body Image”). Girls are susceptible to influences telling them what they should look like even at a young age. According to a study published in the journal BMC Public Health, children as young as seven and eight-years-old already have notions about the ideal body. An analysis of more than 4,000 students from Nova Scotia revealed that young girls' happiness with their bodies is directly linked to how thin they are (Sharples). Backing up these notions is the media that these young girls are faced with. For example, in all of Disney’s movies the lead female role is portrayed by a stick thin, yet voluptuous woman.…

Media targeting teenage girls are emphasizing the ideal of thinness as beauty. When you stop and think about the fact that the average height and weight for a model is 5'10" and 110 lbs, and the height and weight for the average woman is 5'4" and 145 lbs, it's easy to see why this creates a tremendous health risk for young girls.…

According to the Seretean Center for Health Promotion, " the term, "body image" has been coined to describe a person's inner sense of satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the physical appearance of her/his body." (From The Wellness Column, April 1, 1996.) In my research, I found that many young girls are dissatisfied with their bodies and many "strive" to look like the "waif-thin" models or actresses one sees on television or in fashion magazines. There was a lot of information and facts on body and image that I found on the Internet. However, one website, Just Think Foundation, supported my belief that the media, magazines in particular, do indeed influence young girls to be "thin" in order to be popular and beautiful in our society. For example, I was in…

A questionnaire was given to 548 female public school students ages 11-18 in a working class suburb in Boston, MA. Body dissatisfaction was being measured on the influence of fashion magazine. When results came back from the questionnaires, it did show that pictures from magazines known as print media did have a powerful impact on weight and shape perception of these girls. Close to half of them even reported wanting to lose weight after viewing the magazine photos. The majority of the school girls showed they were unhappy with their current body weight and size. From this study, it showed that fashion magazines caused this impact which supports the hypothesis. Its main focus was the correlation of print media on beliefs of body weight and shape of young girls and it has shown they are positively associated.…

A study was done to explore the effects of short exposure to appearance-related media on young girls’ body image. Some writings/studies has suggested that girls at the age of 6 and older are experiencing problems with their body, or body dissatisfaction (Dohnt & Tiggemann, 2005). Some researchers are even saying that girls as young as 5 are having problems with their body image. There is some evidence that suggests that young children are aware of being thin or the “thin ideal” that exists in today’s society. Researchers are focusing on the information underneath that may contribute to why young people are thinking things about an ideal body type. In this study, (Hayes & Tantleff-Dunn, 2010) chose to examine the effects of exposure to popular animated children’s media on young girls’ body image and appearance-related behaviors.…

Looking beautiful and having a thin body has become a standard today, which everyone wants to achieve today. People are bombarded with amazing beautiful images from watching television, surfing the internet and reading magazines, which forces people emotionally to become like them. People today, especially women, believe that perfect beauty and thinness is a norm and it is achievable by wearing beautiful clothes, applying makeup and by reshaping the body. Media has taken over people mind by pressurizing them to look like celebrities and one of those images sticking on those beauty and health relates magazines and ads. Media has made beauty business a huge hype. Showing white faces, selling different kinds of creams and serums, is just making women self-esteem decrease. Women become insecure about their beauty and bodies, which makes them to buy clothes and diet products to reform to their satisfaction. The media is supposed to portray what is considered to be normal; therefore, affects what society considers normal. The media's portrayal of body image affects teens negatively through using stereotypes, encouraging sexual behavior, and promoting unnecessary products. Teens are very gullible during the difficult and already confusing part of their development. Thus what the media tells them is "normal" affects them more so than adults. My Hypothesis is that I expect to find that the media is the leading cause of negative body image issues , regarding teenage girls.…
