How Does Miller Use Foreshadowing In The Crucible
Miller makes sure that the play is assembled so that the conclusion of the conflicts appear inevitable.
He has written the play in a way that makes Eddie’s downfall obvious with the use of foreshadowing and other language techniques. Eddie’s opposition with impossible obstacles such as trying to overcome the fact that his niece has grown up and his inability to admit his inappropriate feelings for Catharine along with his extreme loathing towards Rodolpho and later on Marco all comes to the final act that doomed the character Eddie Carbone .

The writer starts to foreshadow before the characters are presented to initiate the readers to the idea that the play will contain hardships and problems between them. “Bloody course” This suggest that the community in the play is bound to contain an act of violence that is suggested by Alfieri by using the word “bloody”. Eddie Carbone is the protagonist of the play. He is forceful, hard working and possessive of Catherine. However, he does show generosity and warmth especially when Marco and Rodolpho come into the country. Eddie is a simple man who has little interests outside of work and family; he is too protective of Catherine always laying down laws for her and expecting her to obey him. As the play develops Eddie is finding it more and more difficult to accept that Catherine is growing up this leads Eddie to change to a more aggressive, angry and jealous person leading to his eventual death. The obvious reason for Eddie's death was that Marco was outraged with Eddie because he informed the information bureau about Marco and Rodolfo being illegal immigrants. Technically, Eddie is wholly to blame as it was his decision to tell the immigration bureau. However Catherine and Rodolfo didn't help make the situation any better by their actions throughout the play.…

Through the film, we can clearly see that Eddie is very easy to be outrage by anything which challenges his ‘pride’ in his mind even includes his family but not just the discrimination from the white society. Eddie always shows his activism through many overt behaviors which even affect his own family for example the night when he is been lock up because of his single protest with a sign ‘I’m not leaving here till I get a drink’ after he was kicked out the bar as an Indigenous people which he is proud of. His agitation and careless brings many troubles includes both ways of incomes and family relationship to his family, making their happiness on the blink of destruction. There is a sudden shock when Eddie kisses Catherine. However there is also sadness as the audience feels the longing Eddie has been feeling from the beginning of the play. The atmosphere for some may be sickening as they feel that it is wrong fro Eddie to feel the way he does about Catherine much less to actually do anything about it such as kiss her. Whereas others may feel understanding towards Eddie as he has been holding his feeling in for quite some time maybe even before the time the play began.…

The resolution according to Miller is provided in the play not “to write an unmeant word for the sake of the form”, but to make the form capable of saying what must be said (Miller, 31). Miller also sees the ending as a creation of a higher degree of consciousness (Miller, 21). The ending of the play slightly follows the Greek tragic format which believes in a world controlled by the fates directed by gods. Miller disagrees with this idea as he believes that man’s fate mainly falls in his own hands, but still he agrees with the Greek tragedy that the world is moved by fates (Abbotson, 45).…

At the end of Act One, Miller subtly suggests the idea of justice through Marcos defensiveness over his brother and also Eddie’s actions towards Rodolfo. After Eddie hits Rodolfo the audience gets the feeling that he feels this is justice for Rodolfo leading Catherine away from the life Eddie wanted her to have. This is emphasised by Eddie’s use of the word ‘Danish’ to describe Rodolfo. By using this as a nickname Miller is trying to access the point that Eddie is trying to isolate Rodolfo from the Italian community and also their family. The true sense of justice in this scene however, comes from Marco who ‘raises the chair over his head’. This is a clear sense of warning implied by Marco, which is clearly registered by Eddie, ‘Eddies grin vanished.’ This, to Marco, is a feeling of justice coming to Eddie for trying to make either him of his brother feel like they don’t belong. While also foreshadowing what will happen at the end of Act 2.…

In Arthur Miller’s play ‘A View from the Bridge’ we see that his main character, is Eddie Carbone. Eddie is an average man who is in the working class. His job is longshoreman in the dock from Brooklyn Bridge. We can believe that his biggest fatal flaw was that he cared too much for Catherine and by caring too much for her he ended up dying. The other flaws Arthur Miller gave Eddie was that he was too jealous of Rodolpho, and he was too proud to forgive Marco when Rodolpho apologized. His jealousy, pride and that he cared is what made him die but all of that was foreshadowed by Alfieri our narrator in the play.…

Eddie was also a very caring man. He was always good with small children at the pier. The book says they always liked and respected him. He cared enough to save a little girl’s life at Ruby Pier, losing his own. He was always attentive and kind to his wife. They may have had some rough times but they stuck it out. He was always there when she needed him and he was helpful when she was injured and ill. He also cared about others enough to save someone’s life but lost his own. If he hadn’t cared about the safety of the children at the pier he wouldn’t have saved the little girl, but he did. He tried to make sure no one was injured on his watch.…

Another dramatic device cleverly used by Arthur Miller is sub-text. This makes the audience think about Eddie's attitude to the other characters, especially the other males. He adds simple events into the plot, which can mean a great deal to the play. For example Marko challenges Eddie to lift the chair one handed. This fails and Eddie is proved not to be the strongest male. I think Eddie feels his place at the top of the unofficial pecking order threatened so tries to re-establish himself as alpha male. Eddie…

Eddie has maintained his family through life and this fact has made him overprotective and suspicious of anyone who may come between them, especially Catherine. Eddie’s feelings for Catherine are clearly indicated in quotations such as ‘he envelops her with his eyes.’ This desire is hidden from many of the other characters but the fact that this is strong enough to ultimately make Eddie betray his family by reporting Rodolpho and Marco to the immigration police reveals how destructive and obsessive desires like this can be as they blind Eddie. The theme of betrayal is seen by this act of Eddie, blinded by jealousness.…
