After meeting Clarisse Montag’s view of fire and how he used it changed.
He felt regretful for working with fire “Montag’s hand closed like a mouth crushed the book with wild devotion, with an insanity of mindlessness to his chest.”(Page 37) Montag’s change of opinion on destroying books caused him to save one. He blamed his hands for his actions and pretended he had no control over them. Montag did not know what to do “He gazed, shaken, at the white hand. He held it way out, as if he were farsighted. He held it close, as if he were blind.”(page 38) Montag was trembling while he was trying to get the lady out of the house. He did not want to kill anybody else with
fire.
Montag found a good use for fire when he burned away his old life. He relived his self by burning things “He burnt the bedroom walls and the cosmetics chest because he wanted to change everything.”(Page 116) Montag used fire for a good cause to change his old life and have a fresh start. He did not want to use fire to destroy things any more. “Fire was best for everything.”(Page 116) Montag identified what he really needed to burn instead of books. Montag felt happy for using fire to change things in a good way. Montag was tired of using fire as a destructive source. “It was not burning. It was warming. He saw many hands held to its warmth, hands without arms, hidden in darkness.”(Page 145) He found out that fire was not just for destroying things it was for comfort and warmth. He knew now that fire could be used as a good source for him. “He hadn’t known fire could look this way. He had never thought in his life that it could give as well as take. Even its small was different.” (Page 146) Montag did not know that he could use fire for a good. He felt good and different when using fire for a good thing. Montag was a fireman that loved to burn things with fire. Fire was passion for him. He did not care about anyone else. When he met Clarisse his thoughts on things changed a lot. At the end he felt ashamed of what he had done throughout his life with fire. He felt warmth from the fire and a good feeling because he had burnt his old life and started a fresh new life.
