This scene takes place near the end of the end of the play. Ophelia has just died and her grave is being dug in the graveyard. Hamlet and Horatio come in and speak with the grave diggers. Later in the scene the funeral procession come through with Claudius, Gertrude, and Laertes. A major theme in this play is the conflict between action and inaction. Very few times in this play do the characters take action. It mainly a play of words and observation. So many scenes the characters stand, talk, and watch. In the very few scenes in which the characters do take action terrible things happen. This leads onto another theme of the play, death. Death and murder are the driving forces in the play. The main conflict is between Hamlet and Claudius
There would be bones and grave stones everywhere along the ground in terrible disarray and condition. In center stage would be a fresh grave with a clean tombstone. The freshness and cleanliness of the grave need to be juxtaposed to the filth and death while also exemplifying the serenity that come along with it. The play would be performed on a thrust stage because they are just a personal preference. Also by having a thrust stage, as Shakespeare did in his time, the audience would feel more involved in the scenes and to make the play feel more personal. Diane Kruger fits the role because she looks kind and loving but also has the capacity to switch and be a monster who conspired with her brother to kill her husband. She needs to be a loving mother but also at the same time have a possibility that everything she is doing is for her own benefit and gain. She needs to be even more mysterious and cloaked that Claudius. Kruger would be able to convince the audience one way or the other of her motives but still leave the other side open for
