How Does Sherman Alexie Create Tension In What You Pawn I Will Redeem
In Sherman Alexie’s “What You Pawn I Will Redeem”, closure is provided as through successfully completing the level of expectations and questions, the story provides a conflict and just exactly as you’d expect it gets resolved. The suspense leading up also provides us with a more ‘satisfying’ sense of closure as a majority of loose ends are tied up. Though it could be said the main conflict of the story gets closure, the overarching homeless background and horrible conditions the main character is in do not get resolve and we are left wondering what becomes of the protagonist even though he achieved his goal, we get satisfaction from the resolved conflict and frustration from the lack of overarching resolve as well.
The story works to resolve

The climax is presented in a mysterious ways. For example, Alaska’s death didn’t have much background information; Miles and Chip knew that the dean was unaware of the full story, just like them. Takumi, knowing that he wasn’t going to be there for graduation left a note in their room the day before describing everything that happened that day and why it played out that way. The conflict was plotted perfectly in the story. The climax was both melodramatic and calamitous. I enjoyed reading the conflict because it kept you attached to the book and the characters, you feel like you are witnessing the story yourself; it effects you a makes you ponder what would you do if you were in the same situation as Miles or Chip. I recommend the novel Looking for Alaska by John…

The tension that Steinbeck creates in chapter six is very prominent; there are moments of peace and moments of despair. The first case in which Steinbeck creates tension is at the very beginning of the first chapter where the reader can hear peace. It is only after reading chapter six that the reader on hindsight can compare the peacefulness in the first chapter to the tension in the last chapter, this creates tension as the reader is now well aware that one of Steinbeck’s narrative techniques is that the movement goes from harmony to discord. Steinbeck also uses pathetic fallacy, figurative and colloquial language to build the tension in the readers mind.…

The short story "Class" by Sherman Alexie tells of the struggles of an American Indian man and tries to demonstrate how he reacts to his contrasted feelings and diverse world around him. The central theme of Alexie's short story is contrast, and this theme is evident throughout the story, even in the smallest of details. The actions, emotions and even the language of the characters contrast and these contrasts clearly illustrate the difference the characters have in class.…

Finally, I liked how there were two conflicts in the book that were both easy to follow. Since each chapter rotated from Oliver’s view to Delilah’s view it was easier to see each character’s individual conflict versus both character’s views combined. The main conflict Delilah is facing is shown in one of her chapters when the story says, “Angry tears spring to my eyes. I’m[Delilah] not sad; I’m tired of being told by someone else what I’m allegedly feeling. ‘You’re[Delilah’s mom] one to talk,’ I say. ‘You’re taking me to a psychiatrist when you haven’t opened up for five years! I guess it’s perfectly normal to just work yourself to the bone , because then you don’t have time to realize how depressing your life is.’” The main conflict that…

At the very end of the story he states "The Bus pulled out, headed for L.A. with its headlights sweeping like slow yellow flares across drunken faces, as if images of the dead had followed Lily and me from a distant land only the heart could bridge." (95) In this moment Komunyakaa adds expense yet closes his story. For this particular story I felt that in a way he was taking a step by continuing his education but that he had a long way to go when it comes to dealing with his time in Vietnam. Vietnam obviously needs to be addressed and we see that he is taking a step but there is added anticipation by knowing that he has a bigger much more serious problem to address. I like how he closes his story by adding more suspense. I become more engaged and enthralled by a story when writers do this. I like that it ends but that it also addresses that there…
