For thousands of years, a collection of books called “The Bible” has affected humanity in several ways. It has changed the course of human history, is ever changing the present state of the modern world, helped shaped politics we know today, and affect social, moral and ethical behavior among all men. The Bible is a collection of books; First is the Torah, which is the first five books of The Bible. After the Torah is the Talmud which is the remaining books within the old testament. These books themselves are the pillars of Judaism. The new testament begins with the Gospel, which is the story of Christ and the works he did. The following section of books is the Epistle. These books have caused wars, unity and created a foundation for our modern society. The significance of The Bible can be broken into the major section of books in which it was written. The Torah is the first five books of The Bible. It describes how God created the Earth, the land, the creatures, and man. Judaism studies these books as not only their history but their guidelines on how to live their lives. The Torah throughout history set a standard structure of behavior among all men. It also introduced the idea of monotheism, the belief of having one god instead of many. The Ten Commandments, which are located in Exodus and Deuteronomy, explain how humans should interact to appease God. The effects of the Torah can still be seen today in our justice system. The courts still function as they did when Moses created the justice system. (Ref 1 Aish.com) Which translated in to the other effects it had on society. The United States Constitution was based on the behavior established in the Torah. This foundation of behavior has created laws and set a standard for our modern political life today. Christianity, which is the largest world religion, follows the life of Jesus as a standard of moral, ethical, and social behavior. Jesus was Jewish, in turn he followed a Jewish life style. Most all Christians follow Jesus example of human behavior, which bases back to the Ten Commandments. The Jewish faith doesn’t just follow the Torah though, the other pillar to their beliefs is the Talmud. The Talmud helps explain and delves in to more detail what was stated in the Torah. The Talmud helped shaped religious leaders to help guide the people to understand the wishes of God. In the Jewish faith, the Talmud stands as a teaching text for religious leaders. In history these leaders controlled all aspects of society. Judges, politicians, and priest are examples of those leaders. The Talmud helped teach them how to be effective leaders within their society. In the modern world, these same principles still resonate in society today. The most glaring example of this today is Israel. The Talmud, as well as the Torah, effect Israel at a local, national, and global level. It explains why and how they interact with other nations, and what policies are in place for the Israeli people. This changes how they interact on a political level though. The rules that dictate their behavior is deeply rooted in the religious views. The pillars, the Torah and Talmud, effect all aspects of Israel’s political structure. This ties in with the moral, ethical and social behavior can be seen in Israel’s governing approach, because of the importance of the Talmud. The standard of behavior first seen in the Torah was taught and spread thru the leaders who learned the Talmud. Which helped established this behavior among all followers until it became the foundation of what was right and wrong in human society. This conduct is so significate that it translated in to Christianity. Jesus the most important figure in Christianity had a profound effect on all aspects of history and the present as well. His message was first seen in the Gospel of The Bible. Christianity is the largest religion in the world.
The words in the Gospel is the story of Jesus, the son of God. His actions and words have translated centuries and still hold great significance today. Human history has also been affected by the teachings of Jesus. When early Christian churches, Jesus followers, became more commonplace they man huge changes in history. They created more equality with women and slaves. Women and slaves could worship with the men and the free. Early Christians also valued all life, and with that mentality started the end of infanticide (killing of babies). These were big steps to a more modern life, which began from the words of Jesus and the effect he had on people. Some of the lasting effects that are common in modern society is the monetary rules within Christianity. The most basic forms of capitalism came from the teachings after Jesus. Christianity made free enterprise the correct way of controlling an economy. Today, especially in America, we still embrace the free enterprise system. Any person can open a business and create personal profits from that business. This ideology would have never been able to become a powerful economy without the foundation Christianity started. Politically the Gospels have affected government structure, America being a very good example of that. This ideology was established by the Gospel and Jesus. Jesus spread messages that all men were equal in the eyes of God, and the authors of the great American democracy were believers of Christianity. Though politics shows the impact of Christianity in the modern world, it has also had a profound effect of the social, moral and ethical behavior of humanity. Compassion and mercy is a human trait, but Jesus showed people how to be shining examples of these traits. The Gospel tells stories of Jesus humanity and gave guidelines for all people to follow. These stories translate in to modern times, treat others how you would be treated, embodies compassion and mercy, which is the core of Jesus’ message within the Gospels. The Gospels are only the first four books of the New Testament, these messages are translated and expounded upon in the Epistles. The Epistles are like the Talmud, in the sense it expands and explains the message of the core of the faith.
The Epistles help teach and explain the message of Jesus within the Gospel. Unlike the Talmud, Christians wanted all men to learn and read the word of God, not just the leaders teaching the people what the message was. This desire to have all learn helped form and create standard education. Churches help teach people to read and interpret, so they could spread the word of God. This made education very important within the Christian faith. The Epistles were read by the people so that they could better understand the wishes of their God. This caused more people to live by these words and helped shape the modern world. In modern times, we all have a right to choose what beliefs we have, this stems from being educated and literate. Early Christian churches teaching common people to read has lead humans to have more choice. We choose what religion we follow, how we follow and practice that religion. This leads to a freedom of choice, which also can be seen within American Government today. In our society we choose what leaders will represent us within our government, what laws we want to follow, and what direction our country will head in the coming years. This effect can also be seen throughout the world in any Democracy. These things we take from granted come from early Christian churches wanting to have a standard of education for all people to learn the word of God.
The Epistles also better explained what Jesus was trying to express through the Gospel, “Treat thy Neighbor as Thy self.” The Epistles explained how to live these words from Jesus and helped reinforced social, moral and ethical behavior. These behaviors can be seen in the trait of charity, for example. The Epistles helped explain how to be charitable, giving to others who need it. Feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, and giving medicine to those who can’t obtain it are all examples of modern and historical acts of charity. Modern Christian churches spend a healthy portion of their time building and helping people define what charity is. This has led to hundreds of Non-Profit Organizations. Most of these Organizations have a base of religious morals that are found within the Gospel and the Epistles. All the New Testament comes together and ends with the consequences, good or bad, within Revelations. Revelations is the end of the New Testament, and The Bible. It explains what rewards the righteous will obtain, and what consequences the corrupt will suffer according to God. Since Revelations was written it has explained these rewards and consequences which has affected people for centuries. It told humanity there is a quasi-time line, but the end will come. This idea throughout history has caused some people to follow God out of fear, but this has translated into modern times as well. There are people in modern society that live every day in anticipation for the end in fear of the consequences of not being ready when it occurs. This is the common thought that consequences and rewards is all Revelation encompasses. Revelation also includes many political ideologies as well though. John, the author of Revelations, described our modern day political systems in around 69-79 A.D. For example, Revelations state that we will have a unified political and religious system throughout the world near the end. We are heading in this direction, with the establishment of the United Nations, European Union and NATO are all examples of countries becoming unified, and the basis of their politics still come from the moral behavior described throughout Christianity. Revelation affects our personal lives as well as political. The fear people associate with Revelations of fire and brimstone causes some at the end of their life to become aware of their mortality. This has been known to cause people to become very religious at the end of their lives, from fear of punishment of flames. Those who have been religious throughout their lives, feel a sense of comfort and peace near the end in comparison though. All sections of books with in The Bible effect humanity at all levels, even Revelations, which is what is to come, not stories of what has happened. The Torah, Talmud, Gospels, Epistles, and Revelations all play a significate role throughout history. The importance also translated in to modern society, politics and the acceptable behavior of all humans. The Torah and Talmud, the pillars of Judaism, created the foundation, and the Gospel, Epistles, and Revelation expanded upon that foundation to create what we know today. There is no series of books that has affected society and humanity as much as The Bible. It helped created Democracy, compassion, charity, education, unity, equality, courage and fear. It has translated time, been passed down by every generation to the next, helping guide people to live a good fulfilled life. What will The Bible create and teach throughout the next generation? How much more do we have to learn from one collection of books? Only time will tell where The Bible will take humanity in the years to come.
