This internal conflict that Chris faces on how to proceed with their financial situation and whether or not to pursue his dream of a dive shop is important to Chris’s decision to began diving. This goal of opening a dive shop propelled him to achieve higher goals in diving. Those higher goals came with a lot of risk. He could have lost everything, including his home and savings.

The guideline determined life and death. If lost, Chris and his son Chrissy would not have been able to find their way out of the cave, get trapped, and die.

Chris responded to the conflict by trying his hardest to recover the line. He swam after it “like a large fish after a trolling lure” and barely was able to recover the guideline. His son's careless action of tossing the guideline to Chris resulted in a dire situation that could have ended in loss of life.

In diving, it is very important to go up in slow increments after a deep dive to relieve excess nitrogen in the blood stream. This process is called decompression. Deep dives also require mixed air, which helps a diver stay focused. That day, Chris decided to use regular air. After Chrissy got trapped in the sunken submarine, his father Chris did his best to aid him in removing the object pinning him down. In the process of freeing Chrissy, Chris became confused due to the narcosis effect of using the regular air, and exited out the wrong entry way with his son. They could not find the air tanks necessary for decompression which would remove the nitrogen buildup in their systems. Chris was faced with two choices, drown or come up with nitrogen in their blood that could be removed with a hyperbaric chamber. They decided to take their chances and
