Thoreau knows that Homer is not a simple read it has more complexion, but he knew that if someone reads it will build character and improve vocabulary. We start off as little kids and our vocabulary is not really great ,but as we grow and the more you read the more vocabulary you learn. Thoreau is saying if you don't put effort into something more complex than you aren't really learning you aren't challenging yourself and it's sort of pointless. Reading something more complex may not be the most funniest thing to do but if you actually read a classic it helps you learn more about things in the past you didn't even realize existed. Classics are made for a reason so that future generations can enjoy and cherish reading more complicated
