On the eleventh of September, 2001, four planes set off bound for separate destinations across the United States of America. Little did the passengers know as they boarded these planes that they would never live to see another day, as Muslim hijackers were onboard the flights with the intention of launching a terrorist attack on the country. Two of the four planes were deliberately crashed into the Twin Towers in Lower Manhattan, New York City, killing thousands of people and injuring hundreds more. A third plane was flown, once again deliberately, into the Pentagon – the headquarters of the US Department of Defence – killing everyone on board. The fourth plane was bound for the country’s capital city, Washington D.C., but the passengers managed to stop the hijackers from reaching this destination and instead crashed the aircraft into a field in Pennsylvania. Everyone on board the plane was still killed, but they saved hundreds of innocent …show more content…
civilians from losing their lives should the plane have continued to Washington D.C. As a result of the Muslim attackers, Amercian society changed in a massive way. It changed the way they think of, and behave around, people of the Muslim culture; it affected the nation’s security measures greatly and it made people in America lose their sense of trust in President Bush and his government.
Before September, 2001, Muslims were regarded as a peaceful race and lived in harmony with the Amercian people. The Americans had no reason to dislike them or discriminate against them, but after 9/11 everything changed. For the sole reason that the suicide terrorists happened to be Muslim, Americans (and indeed the rest of the world) have grown to hate this society, labelling them as killers and criminals. Innocent Muslims have been threatened with death by random people who have no right to judge them, and frequently experience violent attacks from passersby just because they share their race with some out-of-order people. Every society has murderers and criminals, so why do we only notice when something big like 9/11 occurs? Well, it is human nature to be afraid, and this explains why the hatred that the Americans feel for the Muslims is so great. Think about it - if your beloved husband or sister had been killed in the attacks on the twin towers, would you really be emanating “warm fuzzies” to any Muslims you came across? Of course not, so it is understandable that the Americans feel the way they do about Muslims. Nevertheless, it is grossly unfair to discriminate against those innocent Muslims who had nothing whatsoever to do with 9/11. This aspect of the change in American society is a multicultural perspective, because it is the Muslim viewpoint against the rest of the world..
Another way that 9/11 changed American society was that it made them realise just how easy it was for hijackers to take control.
This caused a massive increase in airport security measures, and the whole world has been affected because there are so many rules and regulations in terms of what we are and are not allowed to take on board with us. For example, no more than 100mL of liquid is allowed on your person when you fly, because the airlines are so suspicious of everyone boarding their aircrafts that they enforce dozens of rules upon the passengers. This change has had positive and negative consequences, because although we now feel safer when we travel, we are so limited in what we can carry on board with us. This is a current perspective because it is happening right now, and airlines are getting stricter and stricter in how they run. This increase in airline security measures impacted America greatly, and is another factor in their change to
society.
Yet another reason why American/world society changed after the 9/11 attacks was that the Americans lost their sense of trust in George Bush and the government. After the attacks, hundreds of conspiracy theories circulated the country that said 9/11 was an “inside job”, organised by the government as a moneymaking scheme because of the massive insurance policies on the twin towers. Where America had once been a nation that trusted entirely in their government, they became suspicious of everyone else and developed the attitude that no-one can be trusted. America had once seen themselves as the world’s most powerful country, but this feeling was utterly destroyed when they realised that their nation was falling apart. This is a monocultural perspective, because it is two different viewpoints between one culture.
Overall, the attacks on America in September 2001 brought many negative consequences. American society was massively impacted by the hijackings and will never return to the way it was before. Muslims have been affected by the change in society, because the Americans are prejudiced against them as a result of a few rogue men. Airport security measures have skyrocketed, meaning that travelling is safer but much more limited. America has lost their sense of power and security, and they have lost trust in the government too. So, 9/11 affected America greatly and they are left to pick up the pieces left behind by the destruction.
