So many lives were wasted in this conflict. There were many innocent Vietnamese civilians killed and wounded. There were about 587,000 Vietnamese civilians killed from 1965 to 1974. In this same period American has 58,000 service personnel killed compared to the 444,000 dead North Vietnamese soldiers. In addition there were about 224,000 South Vietnamese and allied soldiers died in this war. A total of 1,748,000 people killed in this war are staggering. America spent about 168 billion dollars on the war. That’s almost a trillion dollars in today’s money. The money could have gone to the much needed social programs of the country at that time. From 1965 to 1972 military operations in Vietnam cost 111 billion dollars. The economic cost and military aid to South Vietnam was 28.5 billion dollars. Altogether, the direct cost of the war worked out to about 168 billion dollars. This not including the 350 to 900 billion dollars in veteran care after the war.
