black man accused of raping the white woman. Atticus knew that Tom Robinson was going to be declared guilty because most of the jury was racist, also it was a white person’s word over a black man’s, and they would indisputably take the white person’s side. The racism black people suffered back then was very cruel, and excessive. Atticus’ family was affected personally with the case for a variety of factors. For example, Scout sometimes got in trouble for fighting kids who called Atticus “a nigger lover”, that really enraged Scout and made Scout fight the kids, also they were the talk of the entire town. This means that Atticus was affected personally because Scout caused allot of trouble and the reason why was because kids bullied scout over Atticus defending Tom Robinson. The racism was really alarming back then because even though Atticus was only defending Tom Robinson, Atticus’ family still suffered allot of detestation. Back then, black people were discriminated just because the color of their skin, allot of white people did not like them and would treat them horribly.
For example, in the book it says how Tom Robinson’s wife and kids were harassed by the father of the white woman who accused Robinson of rape. This means that the treatment Robinsons family was getting was not because of what Robinson was accused of but because of the color of their skin because they had nothing to do with what Robinson was accused of. Black people were treated very poorly just because of the color of their skin. The book “To Kill a Mockingbird” is an example of racism back then, it is full of detail and has a realistic effect. It does an amazing job of describing the events, the reader can really picture the events that are going on and how they are progressing. Harper Lee did an amazing job of writing the story, it is vivid, and is very intense. Also the book is about a serious problem that people even now still suffer, people get accused and sentenced for crimes they did not commit, and some say the color of their skin is involved dramatically with their
sentence.
