Benvolio’s respectfulness of the Prince’s requests, such as no more disruptions induced by the Montague-Capulet feud, consequently could have stopped Mercutio from being killed, Romeo from killing Tybalt, Romeo being banished, and subsequently, perhaps hindered Romeo’s unfortunate death. Even so, Benvolio could not convince Mercutio to go home, furthering the plot toward Romeo’s demise. Additionally, the peacefulness and reason that Benvolio possesses could have potentially had the same effect, but he was not adamant enough, while his accompanying characters were too stubborn or too vengeful.
The reasonable Benvolio was a driving force of reason and sympathy throughout the entire play. While this was him constantly struggling to give some logic and kindness to his peers, Benvolio had no lasting effect in improving Romeo’s life. Benvolio was sympathetic and a reliable friend to listen to Romeo’s troubles and pursue a solution, however this simply brought Romeo closer to his bitter end. By helping Romeo to the party, he therefore brought Romeo to Juliet as well. He was a good friend, but this did nothing in the end to stop heartbroken Romeo from taking his own
