Christopher James Dannevig was charged with the murder of Nona Belomesoff on the 12th of May 2010. Eight days into parole, for a crime committed whilst a minor where he detained a person without their consent and held a knife at them, he started committing a crime which led to a 21 year prison sentence. They met up at the same spot, walking the same track for the following five days. On the 10th of May Nona reported to her family that the offender had overpowered her, to the point where she could hardly breathe and was scared. The offender claimed that he was teaching her self-defence. On the 12th of May 2010 they arranged to meet again, this time however having an overnight training camp as it was a requirement for the job he had offered her at WIRES. She was reported missing the following afternoon after she did not return home. On the 14th of May the offender was arrested where he led the police to the creek she was lying in, face down and dead. Whilst he was in custody a conversation took place where the offender revealed that Nona had fallen and hit her head on the rocks surrounding the creek. She survived the fall only to have the offender hold her down in the creek she had fallen into, drowning her. The autopsy conducted was inconclusive on the cause of death but there were however features found that suggested the cause of death was drowning. The trial found that there was indeed motive behind the murder as there was no other alternatives that suggested there was not. He
