How Is Macbeth A Good Leader

According to Machiavelli, a successful leader consists of five crucial characteristics. First of all, in order to be a great leader you should be loved and feared at the same time. However, being feared could be better because that way people would less likely revolt against the leader, but not to the point to be hated. On the other hand, a great leader should be supported by its people. Most importantly, a powerful leader should pretend to be virtuous and kind. By saying that, we can compare that to Macbeth. On Act I, Scene 6, line 63-64, Lady Macbeth says “Look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under it”. At this point, Lady Macbeth is trying to convince Macbeth to kill King Duncan, but by keeping it a secret and acting innocent so no one can
His goal was to become king no matter the consequences or the things he would have to do. In my opinion, I do not support that conclusion or intention for several reasons. First of all, it means that a ruler has power overall and the people cannot do anything about it. For instance, in today’s society, if my best friend wants a specific purse really bad for her birthday and another person wants it too, but there is just one left and I have to fight for it to make my friend happy, does that mean that I can hurt the other person to get the purse because the end is “good” and I can use any less-than-ideal mean to achieve it? That is ethically and morally incorrect. In my point of view, Machiavelli wrote “The Prince” as a manual of how to rule back on those days; nonetheless, nowadays things have changed and in order to be a good ruler you must act differently. For example, if you want to be president of a country you cannot make decisions without taking in consideration the people’s opinions.
