How Is My Antonia Admirable
Antonia exhibits multiple characteristics in the book “My Antonia” by Willa Cather These characteristics lead to Cather being very admirable of Antonia. It is very simple to admire Antonia while reading this book. She is a very admirable person. One of the intensely portrayed characteristics is that Antonia is a hard worker as I stated in the earlier essay. From the moment she and her family arrived she displayed very good work ethics and never ever second guessed herself. She worked on the prairie for the Culter’s, the Burden’s, and the Harling’s. Out of all of the outdoors work she admired so greatly working on the prairie was her favorite of all. While working for the Burden’s she sang,”Oh, better I like to work out of doors than in a house.
I not care that your grandmother say it makes me like a man. I like to be a man.” Working on the prairie was where she loved to be.
Another characteristic is how beautiful she was. Jim was very fond of the way Antonia looked. He always talked about her dark skin and her eyes. In the beginning of the story the passenger conductor also said that Antonia’s skin “was as bright as a new dollar” and that “she’s got pretty brown eyes too.” Along with being beautiful on the outside she was also beautiful on the inside, which brings us to another characteristic. Antonia is a very loving and caring person. She did everything in her power to be the best mother she could be. When a friend visited she said “You wouldn’t believe what it takes to feed them all.” Although it was a difficult task she did whatever she needed to do to take care of her children. This was simply because she loved and cared about her family so much.
Antonia is a very admirable person in this reading. I can see why everyone is so admirable of her. She is a good example of how girls should be. With traits such as being hardworking, beautiful inside and out, caring, loving, respectful, ambitious, and so many other qualities. I have a lot of respect for Antonia and what she does and how she treats the people who surround her.
