How Is Scout Brave
Scout is one of many brave children in the novel. For example, Scout isn’t afraid to stand up to people who might hurt her or her family, and she doesn’t let anyone or anything change the way she does things, as well as, not letting the kids at school get to her and being able to control her emotions and actions. The role of Scout being brave is talked about in the novel. This happens in the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The book focuses on how the separation of blacks and whites used to take place in society during the depression. Scout likes to ask lots of questions and likes to watch and learn about everything in the town of Maycomb. I feel she also brings blacks and whites closer together with certain people. An example of this happening in the book is when Jem is telling Scout to go home but she didn’t want to show that she was being a ‘scaredy cat’. “Scout, I’m telling you for the last time, shut your trap or go home-I declare to the Lord you’re gettin’ more like a girl every day!’ With that, I had no option but to join them.” (Lee 69). This shows that Scout is brave because in these times it was difficult being a girl and Scout didn’t care what other people thought about her. This takes a lot of bravery to do. Another example of when this happens in the book is when Jem is telling Scout that he is going to go back to the Radley house to get back his pants but Scout doesn’t want him to go alone. So she insists on going back with him but Jem convinces her to stay where she was. “It’s not like he’d never speak to you again or somethin’... I’m gonna wake him up, Jem, I swear I am-’ Jem grabbed my pajama collar and wrenched it tight. ‘Then I’m goin’ with you-’ I choked” (Lee 75) This also shows that Scout is brave because even though she is really scared of the Radley house she wants to go back with Jem to get his pants. Most girls would never even think about going back to the house because a lot of the girls then wore dresses and used manners and were also pretty much scared of
