Stanley at the beginning of the novel is that he was not confident in himself.Before Staley came he wasn’t confident in himself but when Stanley came to camp he started to fit in with the other boys at camp.Stanley was not sure if he could trust the boys at camp because all the boys at his school would pick on him (10).When Stanley was walking home a pair of sneaker” fell from the sky” he told the judge the truth, but maybe it would have been better for him to lie (22). And al of a sudden Stanley was asked by Zero to teach him how to read and write but Stanley had to say no because he didn’t want the other boys at the camp to make fun of him. Stanley finally made friends and Stanley to mess it up. Stanley said no for teaching Zero how to read and write because he didn’t want to get made fun of by the other campers, and at the beginning Staley is not standing up for Zero with all the campers and counselors saying that Zero has no brain (74). Even though Stanley is not standing up for Zero from the other campers and counselors he doesn’t want to mess it up for him.Stanley finally agreed to teaching Zero ow to read and write and they even made a deal that Zero would dig half of his hole and Stanley would teach Zero after the hole s are done digging. The warden found out that Stanley and Zero made a deal and that Stanley was teaching Zero how to read and write and Stanley did a big thing that day that he stood up to the warden saying why can’t I dig my hole and still teach Zero how to read and write and all the campers were shocked to hear that Staney talked back to the warden after Stanley talked back he had serious consequences (139). Stanley could have just left Zero there and go on by himself but he helped Zero because he would have done the same for Stanley. Stanley would have never fit at school or camp but with Satley digging all those holes and climbing up the mountain Stanley lost all of his weight (9). Stanley didn’t even try and all of a sudden it happened and Stanley started to make friends at camp. Two nights later after Stanley and Zero made it up the mountain Stanley laid awake staring at the stars. Stanley was happy to fall asleep, Stanley knew he had no reason to be happy. It occurred to to Stanley that he hadn’t remembered the last time he was felt happiness.It wasn’t only camp green lake, Stanley's life was miserable and even before Stanley was unhappy at school where Stanley had no friends(186).Everywhere Stanley went no matter what Stanley was always unhappy till that one
