Firstly, Jun Jun is a very poor looking boy in the dumpsite, conversely he has money and a big dream like everyone else. Father Julliard said “what [rat] did took [his] breath away “when he told a convincing lie. Other people call him “rat”, because he lives with a rat and somehow came to look appear like one. This show that it is easy for rat to manipulate other people however, he helped Gardo and Raphael excessively with their journey. Even though, Rat looks innocent and naïve, he is smart and brilliant. Secondly, People see José Angelico as a robber but he actually did it for a good course.
He sacrificed himself for the people who lived in poverty. He said in the letter “know that [his] mission was simple, and what [he] did, [he] did for [Pia] and children like [her]”.Jose worked for Senator Zapata in the hope that he would leave him destroyed. Zapanta was a really greedy men who stopped a nation from it tracks. Worse than that, he reassured people that to steal is to make money. So the people, who were weak and poor, lost everything they had. People who knew José really well, know that he would never steal and this shows that appearances can be
deceiving.
Finally, Raphael was seen by others as childish boy but when he was getting beaten up by the police, he didn’t give up. Raphael said “The garbage boys were ahead of the garbage police and [he] had said nothing to those men” when the police let him free. Everything started from the words that came out of his auntie’s mouth. That was the only clue they had. Just those words led the whole dumpsite being destroyed. Raphael was bashed and brutally injured. They told him that they were going to drop him from a high window but he still didn’t give up. This proves that looks can be deceiving in the novel ‘Trash’.
Overall, the characters in the novel ‘Trash’ prove that look can be deceiving. The words of Father Juilliard, proves that the character Jun Jun is smart and intelligent. José Angelico’s actions and how the character is seen by others, clears that he is a moral character. Similarly, Raphael didn’t give up even though his life was at risk, this proves that he is strong and not childish.
