In 1911, he led his men into their first successful battle, the Battle of Ciudad Juárez. Madero became president and made Villa a colonel. But because of his differences with Pascual Orozco, another commander, in May 1911, he resigned from the army. In 1912, Orozco, was left out of government and began a revolution against Madero. General Victoriano Huerta and Villa joined to defend Madero. Later that year in June, Huerta accused Pancho Villa of stealing his horse and ordered Pancho Villa to be executed. Even though Madero was able to grant Villa a pardon just before his execution, he still had to go serve time in jail. December 27, 1912 he escaped. On February 22, 1013 Huerto killed Madero and took over. Pancho Villa heard of this and teamed up with some friends, Emiliano Zapata and Venustiano Carranza, to overthrow Madero. Villa conquered many lands in the north, such as Chihuahua. His division was known as Division del Norte (Division of the North). He spent much of his time redistributing land and helping the economy. Villa and Carranza became divided during the summer of 1914 and now they were enemies.
