Magnesium ribbon was reacted with Hydrochloric acid in three different experiments to determine the charge on a metal ion. After running multiple tests in the three different procedures, the Crystallization method proved to be the best method for determining the charge of the metal ion by using mole to mole ratio.…
With the data below, calculate the percent change in mass, graph the data, determine where the percent change in mass crosses the X axis, determine the solute potential of the potato if the room temperature is 24oC, and finally determine the water potential of the potato.…
1. Throughout the lab, if the mass of potato is decreased, the solution is hypotonic; if the mass of potato is decreased, the solution is hypertonic. If the mass stays the same as initial mass, the solution is isotonic.…
The exercise is similar to Exercise 2, except that cores from potatoes are utilized instead of dialysis bags. Submerge the cores in solutions of varying sucrose concentrations. Graph data of percent change and determine which concentration of…
Hypothesis statement: If you put sugar water in one cup, salt water in another cup and plain water in another cup then the slice of potato will expand in the sugar water shrink in the saltwater, and stay the same in the regular water because of the hypertonic, hypotonic and isotonic solution.…
7. Study the graph you have plotted for part C of the experiment. What is important about the point where the best fit line crosses the X-axis? What is the concentration of sucrose in your potato?…
Eight8 g of sugar were placed on the scale, and then transferred into the volumetric flask (Table 8 shows the calculations of the molecular weight, moles, mass, volume and molarity recorded before doing so). Distilled water was added to the sugar until a total of 25mL were in the flask. Then the flask was capped, and the solution was mixed together until the sugar was dissolved. Once dissolved, the solution was transferred into the glass beaker, and certain aspects were measured and recorded in table 9. Once this step was complete, 2.5 mL were removed from the solution, and diluted in the volumetric flask. The steps were then repeated using different amounts of the diluted solution each time .…
The reason for this experiment was to figure out which solution would prevent the apples from browning the most and to determine if pH has an effect on the prevention of browning of the apples. My hypothesis stated that white grape juice would prevent the apples from browning the most. This hypothesis was refuted, lemon was actually the solution that prevented the browning of the apples the most. Before the apples were dipped in the solution, the average rating of the apples on a scale of 0 to 5, 0 being the least brown and 5 being the most, solution A, apple juice, was 0. The average rating on the apples going into solution B, lemon juice, was 0.…
The objective of this lab was to determine the percent (by mass) of sugar in a non-carbonated beverage by measuring its density and using calibration curving showing the density and concertation of standard solution. The procedure used in this experiment was 2 50mL beaker and 10-mL volumetric pipet & pipet pump.…

The way to get the full results of this lab was through the process of osmosis. Osmosis is the movement of water across a membrane into a more concentrated solution to reach an equilibrium. When regarding cells osmosis has three different terms that are used to describe their concentration. The first of these words is isotonic. Cells in an isotonic solution show that the water has no net movement and the amount of water that goes in is the same that goes out. Isotonic comes from the root iso, which means equal. This makes sense because the definition of isotonic is: same concentration. The second out of three words is hypotonic. Cells in a hypotonic solution make the water move into the cell to spread out the cells solutes to eventually reach an equillibrium. Hypotonic comes from the root word hypo, which means low/below. The actual definition for hypotonic is: less concentrated. Hypertonic is the last out of the three words. A cell in a hypertonic solution makes the water leave the cell to try to spread out the solutes outside to eventually reach an equillibrium. Hypertonic comes from the root word hyper, which means more/high. The definition of hypertonic is: more concentrated.…
Students should check the subject's web site regularly as important information, including details of unavoidable…
My hypothesis is: By changing the concentration of sugar, I think that the water will move from a high water concentration to a low concentration via osmosis. I predict that the more sugar concentration there is, the rate of osmosis will increase and therefore will have an effect on the results of the experiment.…
We started setting up our experiment by measuring different molar solutions (0M, 0.25M, 0.5M, 0.75M and 1M) of sugar and putting them into separate bottles, along with one bag (12g) of yeast and 300ml of water. We then attached a tube going from the top of each bottle to separate test tubes which were entirely full of water and were placed upside down in a tub of water, stopping the tube from emptying and…
We started the lab by cutting the potato core length (44 mm). Each potato core are placed in test tubes. The test tubes have different salt concentration, test tube 1 has 0% salt concentration, test tube 2 has 0.625% salt concentration, test tube 3 has 1.25% salt concentration, test tube 4 has 2.5% salt concentration and test tube 5 has 5% salt concentration. The next day, we remove the potato core from the test tubes and measure their size. In test tube 1 with a 0% salt concentration, the potato core length after is 44 mm, the change in potato core length is 4 mm so the potato is hypertonic to that solution. In test tube 2 with a 0.625% salt concentration, the potato core length after is 42 mm, the change in potato length is 2 mm so the potato is hypertonic to that solution. In test tube 3 with a 1.25% salt concentration, the potato core length after is 39 mm, the change in potato length is -1 mm so the potato is…
