There are many people who would strongly agree that being a Christian means you can not possibly have fought in the American Revolution, or at least you shouldn’t have. Christians should have supposedly stayed away from all of this, but this is just false. Not only is this statement wrong, but it is kind of confusing at the first glance. Why would a group of people need to stay away from a war that is going to probably impact their present and future life? Why shouldn’t Christians be involved when one of the main reasons of this war was to fight for freedom of religion?
War: this word can change one’s life forever. Everyone is affected whether now or in days to come. No matter who you are you will experience the consequences of war. “But after the search for weapons, I had a different feeling about it: it was real and it had come home to me, too” (Collier and Collier 62). Even in the small town of Redding, people were being affected by the war. Why should Christians not be involved then? They will experience the …show more content…
consequences just like any other person. Just because one is a Christian does not mean they are exempted from facing the trials and tribulations others have. In fact, Christians actually face more than others. “Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed” (1 Peter 4:12-13).
One of the main reasons many came to America was for freedom of religion. In fact, that was why the separatists came over on the Mayflower. They did not like the way their king handled religion to make it fit for his satisfaction. They wanted to separate from the English church, making them persevere in going to America (Britannica). They had illegally formed those independent churches; just because they did not support the ideas of the English church. Christians should be involved because freedom of religion is one of the basic building blocks of this country. It is still a reason why many come to America today.
One of the biggest arguments many make is that it is against the Bible to rebel against government. One would use this verse: “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves” (Romans 13: 1-2). This is saying Christians should submit to their government, and if one disobeys them they are disobeying God. While this is true in some cases, in others it is not so much. Although yes, one should obey authorities; there are some exceptions. If there was a case of an authority figure asking one to do something that one knows is morally unacceptable then they should not obey. One’s conscience will normally tell what is right or wrong, therefore if it tugs and bugs one’s conscience then again one should not have to obey. The American Revolution was a war that had many had fought in.
One group that was involved was the Christians. Many say this is unacceptable, but it is really not. First, why should Christians not be involved when war will affect them, just like anybody else. Second, the reason many came to America was for freedom of religion. If the king was to take over America, the freedom would be lost. The English Christians wanted to be free of the church of England; they would fight or get involved in some way to keep their freedom. Many would say that in the Bible it tells us to obey our authorities. While this is true, there are exceptions. One’s conscience will normally tell what is right and wrong. If one’s conscience is bothered by something to the point that they can barely function, one should listen to it. Also if one already knows that doing something will cause a bad outcome, one should not do it. Even if an authority figure says to do
it.
