Think about sports today, technology has drastically changed sports in many ways. Specifically in soccer it has changed different areas of the beautiful game but for the better. New technology has allowed soccer to grow and flourish in the United states. It has increased the interest through how fans watch games, social media, and even phone apps that allow fans to stay connected to their teams.
Since soccer hasn’t been very prominent in the United States for the past ten years, Tv carriers have had few channels that fans can watch games on. Now, because of the increase of interest in soccer within the United States major Tv carriers have expanded their networks and added more channels that televise only soccer games. Last year NBC made a 250 million dollar, three year contract to cover the European Premier League games in Europe. Social media seems to be the only thing people are talking about these days especially soccer fans.
For example, Twitter, it allows fans to tweet about a certain play or something that happened during the game making it viewable to friends and even players. Some soccer players have even started tweeting with fans about their games about upcoming events. Along with personal accounts, Twitter has a wide range of fan based accounts. A lot of these accounts keep up with player stats and give live updates about a specific game. The soccer world has teamed up with phone apps and created apps specifically for soccer. One Football Brazil is a phone app that was used during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Once downloaded it gave fans updates on the games, final scores, and the tournament schedule. It also allowed fans to talk together about what was happening during the games.
Uphoria is also a phone app that was created specifically for Sporting KC. Along with showing upcoming games, scores, and updates in the game, fans can play trivia games and predict action on the field to earn points. (Wiedeman). Uphoria helps fans stay connected to KC and hear all the buzz before, after, and during the games.
Technology has changed soccer for the better because it has enhanced the fan base and their interest in the sport. It has also altered how they enjoy the games and finally through phone apps and social media the fans have the opportunity to become more dedicated to their favorite teams. “Football is an honest game.
