The Khmer Rouge was a Communist party led by Pol Pot in Cambodia. They took control of the country from 1975 to 1979, and outlawed money, religion, and family (Molloy). Citizens of Cambodia were not allowed to own money or buy anything, practice their own religion freely, and they were denied access to be with family. Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge separated people by religion, wealth, nationality, and intelligence (“Cambodian Genocide”). Blue scarves were issued to the people of the Eastern Zone (Stanton) to show where they were from (“Cambodian Genocide”). Innocent civilians were worked, tortured, and murdered for no reason. The Khmer Rouge organized millions of people to be sent to labor and death camps. Citizens were shot on the spot for speaking a foreign language, being educated, or even just wearing glasses. Between 1975 and 1979 an estimated 1.7 million people were killed by the Khmer Rouge (“Cambodian Genocide”). Nuan Chea, a former Khmer Rouge chief, denied all charges against him for his crimes against humanity during the war (“Khmer Rouge Chief Denies Genocide”). Prevention requires the full devotion of the whole country. Victims and family members have stated that they “want justice, not just for themselves, but also for their children and future generations so another genocide never happens again.” Another way to help is the United Nations and other international organizations can keep tabs on suspected countries and put a stop to anything that looks like it may form into a genocide before it even begins. If all countries and citizens rally together, genocides can be prevented
