How would you feel if even paying money you, have to share your bed with someone else that you might not know or if you and your family have to share your home with some other families? well, that's some of the things that these people have to live every day. Living in small places without any ventilation, light, plumbing or a place where their children can play even sometimes exposed to get robbed, having a high risk of diseases and without fire escapes. In this photo taken by Jacob Riis for his book "How the other half lives" we can see how people that pay a cent to spend the night (the ones that can afford it because many of those people don't have the money to pay it) in those bedrooms with unsanitary conditions without any space to put
their stuff.
According to Riis 508 of the babies that were received at the Randall's Island Hospital 333 of them died, 65.55 percent and 170 of them were picked up in the street. Many of the ones that went from the street are half dead thanks to the all the diseases they acquired. In one of the photos that Jacob post in his book, we can see how two orphans brothers with dirty clothes and sad faces maybe because they were hungry or because they didn't agree on the life they had to live.
The excess of working with this class of people is also a big issue that needs to be solve, many of the children have to work when they're instead of being in the school where they are supposed to be. Workers have to go to work seven-day work weeks, without vacation days or sick days, along with lower wages and all while at a high risk of injuries. In addition, child labor laws had not yet been passed and as a result, young children were working in factories full time with these same conditions.
That's why we need to join our forces and find ways and also make some laws proposes to change the way how the other half lives, you need to be part of the change and say this issues out loud so the government takes some action on the matter.
