Effective communication is very important in developing a positive relationship with people of all ages. They ways in which we communicate with children, young people and adults will vary but the fundamental values remain the same. We communicate predominantly by the ‘spoken word’ but there may be occasions when sign language is required. Efficient communication enables you to build good relationships, thus benefiting the children, young people or adults that you encounter within your role of a Teaching Assistant and in everyday life.

To build a relationship with children, young people and adults you should firstly be able to effectively communicate in the appropriate manner. Bringing yourself down to a child’s level is very important as it will make the child feel less intimidated and allows eye contact between both parties. This will reassure the child and they feel assured that they have your full attention. Listening and responding to children, young people and adults will give them confidence in you. Asking open ended questions can make an individual open up to you and create a positive conversation, enquiring about home life, interests or other topics that they are happy to discuss with you is a good way of building a respectable relationship. Presenting positive and friendly body language and facial expressions can be used to gain trust and make an individual feel at ease with you, making them feel that you are approachable and trustworthy.
