Riding a bike without training wheels is a uniquely exciting and yet intimidating experience in nearly every child’s lifetime. Many can still remember the anticipation felt when watching the wheels on their bikes disappear one by one; many recall the slight uneasiness that came with gripping the handlebars for the first time and feeling the tremble of the transformed object beneath them. Of course, such a transition rarely comes easily and is often accompanied by an endless supply of band-aids and tears. However, after all is said and done, the struggles and the wheels are almost always stored away and forgotten. Similarly in life, it is important to accept challenges and be willing to set goals that exceed one’s comfort zone. As human beings, we often find ourselves dependent on the safety of our “training wheels,” and are burdened by the limitations we place on ourselves. However, it is imperative that we learn to break free of these borders and pursue higher goals as sources of personal growth. By overcoming our fears, we may discover hidden strengths and talents and defeat the obstacles that…

Collier’s thesis is “the new, the different is almost by definition scary. But each time you try something. You learn, and as the learning piles up, the world opens to you.” I agree with Collier’s thesis based on my own experiences I think if you don’t try something you will never know if you like it or not. When I first try snowboarding I was nervous to fall and hurt myself but after confronting it I learned how to stop and balance so I was not nervous anymore and now I really enjoy it.…

The bikes pass under the canopy of pine trees and through the line of junior counselors waving bright yellow oars in the air, while the rest of camp cheers us on. Arriving at the dock, one by one we toss our mountain bikes on the ground and join the line of people waiting to perform the ritual belly flop into Fan Lake. The crowd cringes in sympathy as each body hits the water. My heart races when it is finally my turn to jump with my arms and legs spread from the diving board. My stomach aches when I hit the water, but not as much as my legs do from riding 300 miles in a week. Splashing in the lake, I am amazed to have just completed the bike trip that begins the transition from camper to counselor at Camp Reed.…

You never know what you might be missing out on when you let the fear of trying new things stop you, or what could’ve been if you had stuck with something that you quit after failing at first. Two days later you asked me if I wanted to go again. In “Introduction” to On Monsters, Stephen T. Asma writes, “The monkeys cannot fully confront the snake, but he cannot leave it alone either” (5). Ice-skating was like the snake for me.…

Trepidation filled my head. Despite the negative 10 degree weather, sweat pooled in my gloves and rolled down my face. Thoughts raced through my mind; a wrong execution could mean death. 11 years of ski lessons had cultivated to this one moment. My life was on the line, yet a wave of excitement shook me. I took a look down at the jump that had come to dominate Joe’s backyard, replacing his childhood swing set. The jump was sizable, but not gargantuan. From previous hits I noticed its “poppy” lip - skier talk for a jump that sends you up rather than out - which is ideal for the trick I was about to attempt: a backflip.…

The main theme in “Beyond the Dead Reef” by James Tiptree Jr. is revenge. In this short story, the theme of revenge can be described as caution for the future. The narrator almost ends up dying because he had accidentally offended Jorge and his family. His companion says, “The upshot of it was that you not only insulted his boat in various ways, but you ended by referring to his mother as a dog… He was going to take you out beyond the Dead Reef and leave you there” (Tiptree p. 379).…

Sand between my toes and enjoying some sun while gathered around with a group of friends is what I call, a definition of a great time. The ad Tampax Pearl from Seventeen magazines sells the product through the use of rhetorical fallacies logos, ethos, and pathos. There are six fallacies, and throughout the magazine they are represented by the text, the women in the white bikini, and the beach: false cause, hasty generalization, non sequitur, and appeal to ignorance, false authority, and bandwagon. In the background are the sounds of waves clashing against one another, the sun beginning to lower, and the scent of a bonfire. The game of limbo used as an entertainment to influence laughter, and competition spread to one another.…

The first few steps after the boardwalk may feel rather rocky due to scattered sediments and tiny pebbles sticking on to the soles of your feet, but by halfway to the ocean, it starts getting smooth and cooler with every step you take. If laying around and catching some ray is not your type of fun, there are beach volleyball courts set up, kites to be flown here and safe swimming with lifeguards on the look out. Gazing at the sandy shore, you can see the roaring waves rushing in, toppling forts and castles made out of silken sands that shimmers under the blazing sun like tiny luminous stars in the night sky. Take advantage of this peaceful, quiet moment by standing on the shoreline and wait for the rolling ocean water slide by the ankles of your leg. As the waves try to pull back in, you will feel a sinking sensation on the heels of your foot due to the pressure of your weight and the surrounding sand. Lastly, there is an area for youths with a big, plastic palm tree set up in the middle and tiny sprinklers around it, spraying cold, chilling drops that can be felt even to the people strolling on the boardwalk. The beach is always crowded with families and couples to enjoy on their days off and especially on Friday nights, gorgeous firework shoot off can be seen starting at 9:30p.m. (Only during the summer…

The story Floating by Karen Brennan is about a woman who can miraculously float. She floats around the house day after day seeming to never leave. Her husband, however, seems completely unimpressed by her ability and sees her as a burden. A burden that he must feed and take care of. It is not long into the story before she finds a baby and brings it into her house. While this is happening another story is being told about a woman who meets Satan, and has a conversation with him in her house. The author intended for all of these events to relate to each other, and also to have some sort of deeper symbolism. The woman who aimlessly floats through the halls of her house does not have a choice, she is trapped. Her and every one else in the story is dead and stuck in Purgatory waiting for their eternal fate to be decided. All of them experiencing death in a different way, the man bitter and mean, the woman and baby oblivious,…
