People with type 2 diabetes make insulin, but their bodies don't respond all that well to it. They don't make quite enough insulin, and the cells of their bodies don't seem to take in glucose as eagerly as they should. Some people with type 2 diabetes need pills or insulin shots to help their bodies use glucose for energy. A family history of Type II diabetes,poly-cystic ovary disease, high blood pressure, being overweight, physical inactivity, history of vascular disease (heart attack, stroke for example), high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, previous gestational diabetes, diagnosed metabolic syndrome and your race and ethnic background may all play roles. Treatment includes diet control, exercise, home blood glucose testing, and in some cases, oral medication and/or insulin. Approximately 40% of people with type 2 diabetes require insulin…

I discovered that I was not going to drown in ignorance and helplessness any longer. Instead, I wanted to understand more about the disease and I was not about to stand idly and watch my mother struggle. I explored on the internet, paid visits to the library, took extra classes at school, and ultimately strived to attain the confidence that comes only with knowledge. I pursued the causes and effects of diabetes, and offered the emotional support that my mother’s physician could not provide. Now, I work together with my mother to create healthy and balanced diet plans for not only my brother and father, but also my aging grandparents and…

Diabetes is not a disease to be taken lightly. It is a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke, and the second-leading cause of blindness and kidney failure. It's also the main reason that individuals have their legs amputated. While diabetes can be treated, it's obviously much better to avoid developing it in the first place. In addition, medical treatment for diabetes does little to lessen its effect on heart attack and stroke. So to maximize your health, minimize your chance of developing diabetes in the first place.…

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to maintain a normal blood glucose level, or your body is unable to use the insulin that is produced (NHS Choices). You are likely to develop type 2 diabetes if you are over the age of 40, have a relative with the condition or are overweight. A person is normally thought to have type 2 diabetes if he or she does not have type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent) or monogenetic diabetes (WHO). Patients that suffer from type 2 diabetes generally are given dietary guidance so that they can manage their blood sugar and they are also advised to take their blood sugar once a day to make sure that it is regular. Patients should also increase physical activity and control their weight. It is important that diabetes type 2 is controlled so that it doesn’t progressively get worse and lead to diabetes type 1 diabetes which would mean the patient would become insulin dependent.…

This is the everyday life of people with diabetes. When you have diabetes you have to take a blood glucose monitor and some form of fast acting sugar like juice or candy wherever you go, this means you have to carry a bag big enough to fit this and everything else you carry or a Fanny pack. This may not seem like a big deal but if you forget those things you run the risk of having a low blood sugar which if it is not treated with enough carbohydrates can make you pass out and after an hour to five hours die. Also if you plan on eating or even if you don't plan on eating you might get hungry so most places you go you have to bring your insulin pen or syringe, many needles and a small sharps container to put the needles in afterwards. If you don't take the insulin and the glucose monitors with you but eat any carbohydrates unless your blood sugar is low you’re blood sugar will go high and than you will feel very sick. With diabetes also comes hours and hours of learning. You have to learn how to count carbohydrates which may seem simple but is actually quite hard, you have to learn how to use the insulin and the blood glucose monitors and you have to learn what diabetes actually is also you have to learn how to adjust your insulin, when to take it and you must learn how exercise effects you blood sugar. One of the things people find most difficult is the change in their diets, some people eat candy and junk food all day long, some people just like to snack on fruit but if you snack on anything that has carbohydrates in it, you can’t because you would then have to take insulin and during the first few months of having diabetes you are not allowed to take insulin unless it is during meal…

Diabetes is a lifelong chronic disease, although it can be managed with proper diet and medication. However, there are misconceptions about diabetes as well, for example in the New York Time article called I Have Diabetes. Am I to Blame identified some of these issues. But first I’ll explain the difference between type 1 & 2 diabetes. “In Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas no longer produces insulin, which means that sugar has no means to enter cells. In Type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance means that even though insulin is being produced, cells do not respond to it” (Rivers). The causes of diabetes come from verity of things like genetic predisposition or unregulated dieting, or from being overweight. Often there is negative native about people…

The doctor has wanted me to come in here and explain to you about diabetes. Diabetes is a common disease. Anyone can end up with diabetes but there some people that are at a higher risk for the disease than others. People, for example, that are not very active and they are overweight. People who have real close family like a mom or dad, that have diabetes are also at a higher risk for diabetes. Diabetes effects the endocrine system in our bodies, because our pancreas which is part of your endocrine system is what releases the insulin that our bodies need for our sugars to stay the same and never go in one extreme or the other. At first we would like for you to try to test your sugar at least three times a day and keep a record. When you have diabetes your pancreas is not able to do its job and release the insulin that your body needs so first we try to control it by diets and exercise. For a lot of people this makes a big difference. For the people that diet and exercise still are not enough we try to use an oral medication to regulate the pancreas. There are other measures to take if it your sugar still isn’t becoming regulated. Management of your diabetes is going to require efforts though of a multidisciplinary team. This team is going to be made up of you, the doctor, your nurse, your pharmacist, and of a dietician. It is very important that you participate in this and try to stick with the plan. If diabetes continues unregulated it puts strains on other organ systems especially the cardiovascular system. So maintaining your sugar levels are very important to your body. There are little things in your body that recognize when your sugar is too high or too low and it sends up a message to the brain saying hello we have a problem. The sugar is not where it should be. The brain is like the president of your body saying well release the insulin from the pancreas to lower this sugar or fight it. So your insulin is…

Diabetic eye problems can, in many instances, be prevented through early detection and treatment. Keeping the blood glucose and blood pressure as close to the standard range as possible are necessary first steps in preventing diabetes from affecting eyesight. There are other ways to prevent damage, and that is to stop smoking and once a year have an eye care professional examine your eyes by dilating your pupils. Dilating makes the pupils opening bigger and allows the eye doctor to see the back of your eye. When the eye doctor looks into your eye they will be checking four different areas for possible damage from diabetes:…
