He is demanding our attention as he is in focus and close to the camera and the audience is not. He is also demanding our attention with his body language as he is waving out to the crowd. When you look at this photo you immediately look at Martin. If he were to be looking directly at the camera I don’t think it would make it feel any different. The image still displays a strong message. Martin seems proud and confident of what he said. You can see this in his body language because he stands up proudly, waves and thanks the audience.
