Jem and Scout start to find things in a tree near the Radley’s house. They find gum, pennies and soap dolls. Scout begins to become close friends with a sweet lady called Miss Maudie. Jem and Dill leave Scout behind a lot more.
Unfortunately one day Miss Maudie’s house burns down. She stays positive though and calls it a new beginning.
One warm night Calpurnia comes running inside. She tells Atticus there is a dog who has gotten a disease and will hurt other people if not …show more content…
stopped. The neighbors all come out to see what’s going on. Heck Tate, the sheriff comes, but let’s Atticus puts and end to the problem with his great shot.
Atticus is a lawyer and he is going to protect someone that others don’t like.
A cranky old lady named Mrs. Dubose insults Atticus, so Jem starts to cut up her flowers, and for that has to read to her everyday. Mrs. Dubose continues to insult the Finch family. Later on she passes away, but Atticus sees her as the bravest person ever.
Calpurnia decides to take Jem and Scout to her church which has only African Americans. This a new and exciting experience for the kids. The preacher wants to collect money to help Helen Robinson, the wife of Tom Robinson, the man who Atticus is defending in court.
Tom Robinson was accused of hurting a girl named Mayella Ewell. He has to wait in jail until the trial is over. Atticus stays there to protect Tom, but a group of angry men come. Scout jumps in, talks to the men, and stops them from getting to Atticus.
The trial takes place and Jem and Scout take their seats. Atticus gives lots of reasons about why Tom is innocent, like the fact that he can’t used his left hand. The jury, who decides if Tom did it or not, doesn’t like him just because he is African
American.
Even though it’s obvious that Tom didn’t hurt Mayella, the jury still declares him guilty and he is sent to prison. Mr. Ewell, Mayella’s father isn’t satisfied though, he hates the fact that Atticus did a good job protecting Tom. Mr. Ewell wants his revenge.
Scout is with her Aunt and some church ladies. The ladies begin to say rude things about Atticus, but Miss Maudie stands up for him. Suddenly Atticus comes into the room and tells Calpurnia that Tom died because he tried to escape the prison. They leave to go tell Helen Robinson.
When Scout and Jem are walking home from a Halloween party, they are attacked! Scout is thrown to the ground and Jem’s arm is broken. A mysterious man seems to have saved the kids. The man who attacked them was Mr. Ewell and he was then killed by the strange man.
The mystery man turns out to be Boo Radley! He went out of his house and saved the kids. Mr. Tate, says that Mr. Ewell accidently fell on his knife, but Atticus thinks Jem did it. As they debate Scout goes over and meets Boo. Scout walks him home because he’s shy, but she never sees him again.
