How To Write A Concert Critique
I attended a performance called Organists of Iowa at the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall in Ames on Sunday, March 26th at 3:00pm. This was their 29th annual recital. The performers were Miriam Zach, James Bovinette, and Amy Christensen. Not only do these performers play instruments, but they also teach music. What really pleased me about this performance was the large organ. I have never seen such a musical instrument like that one before in person. The performance was very loud, but the music they played was soothing. It was pleasing to me that they played instruments other than the organ. They also played an oboe, which is part of the woodwinds instrument family, and the trumpet, which is part of the brass instrument family. All of the musicians were very talented, and you could tell they have been producing and practicing music for many years. I liked how the performers made smooth transitions and that each song break was short.
What did not work for me was that the recital was very long in my opinion. I

She was the woman who was playing the organ. She stood out to me because I have never seen anyone play an organ before, and I can imagine that the organ is a very difficult instrument to play. This performer was very into the music she was performing and seemed very enthusiastic toward the audience. The program states that she has been teaching organ courses and music history classes at Iowa State University, which really fascinates me. My overall reaction to Organists of Iowa was very pleasant. The performance was very well put together, and was neat and professional. The music sounded amazing from the organ, trumpet, and oboe. None of the performers messed up, and they had a very successful show with a large audience. It was not a boring show at all; it was very entertaining. It is impressive that this recital is almost at its 30th

The concert that I chose to attend was the Gramophone award winners, Pavel Haas Quartet. Veronika Jaruskova, Marek Zxiebel, Pavel Nikl, and Peter Jarusek were the musicians. They were all very talented. Their movements were amazing and no matter the difficulty, they stayed in time with one another. The songs they chose to perform were Quartet No. 1 in B minor, Op. 50 by the composer Prokofiev, Quartet No. 11 in F minor, Op. 95 “Serioso” by Beethoven, and Quartet No. 5, Sz. 102 by Bartok. All these pieces were amazing both in difficulty and sound.…

performance. I love that they use Benny Goodman’s composition to end the whole concert because it really brought the 1920’s big bang jazz’s feeling back to the audience. I think the repertoire for this performance was good because there were a mix of many different styles, such as contemporary pieces, swing, blues, free jazz, and etc. In my…

My only complaint was that it took a while to fully appreciate the traditional Orchestra. To fully recreate the Led Zeppelin sound, a traditional rock band set up was arranged in the middle of the stage. The electric instruments and drum kit were enough to drown out the other instruments during most of the performance. It was only during certain part of songs, such as “Kashmir”, that it became easier to appreciate other instruments.…

Overall, I enjoyed my attendance at the concert choir held at Benedictine University. The show was well done and I could tell that the members of the choir worked very hard in preparation. Although there were eight songs, the concert went by fairly quick. There was only one baby grand piano in the middle of the stage, but other than that, it was interesting to see that no other instruments were used except for their own voices and they were able to project an excellent performance for the…

On the night of Monday, October 16th, I had the opportunity to perform as part of the Wind Ensemble in the SHS Fall Concert. The ensemble consisted of woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Our band presented two pieces in the concert: a program and an overture. Although we were not as prepared for the concert as I’d hoped, I opine that the wind ensemble performed rather successfully.…

Most things usually do not stand out to any ordinary person attending a choir performance, but a person who knows about music, they were astonished and a bit of a critic. “They were a bit of pitch sometimes. Treble Choir was a bit distracted. There was one girl at the edge that kept on moving and fiddling too much and kept me distracted. Concert choir was a bit too stiff as for their performance, but other than that, they were pretty good. Vocal Ensemble was an overall amazing performance. I’m very proud of my wife, Suzanne” Jeff Brookey. As for I, it was an amazing performance. This performance was a free show and I recommend for people from the community to come and support their students talents.…

For my humanities report, I attended the Wind Ensemble concert at the Timko Barton lobby on October 8, 2015. The concert was so inspiring and refreshing for me since I love music and am currently studying music. Sitting with some many people and listening to beautiful music from a variety of genres was so restoring to the soul. Dr. John Jenkins, the director, was so motivating in every piece of music and of the program. The concert program ran smoothly as the ensemble band transitioned gradually to each different song piece. In addition the scenery added to the peaceful presence during the show. Since the concert took place in the lobby of the music hall, people saw the bright lights coming from the ceiling and they also enjoyed to majestic surrounding of the large glass windows. The Wind Ensemble concert event was a smoothing time to reflect on…

Each choir was singing a different piece by John Rutter. In our choir there were about 8 different choirs that came together for this. The HCCYC was the only choir that included any middle schoolers, but since I skipped first grade, I was the only eleven-year-old on the stage throughout the entire performance. The concert started at eight-o'clock that night and we were the first act. We walk out of stage and everything hits us all at once. The entire venue is absolutely gorgeous, even more so when it is filled up with people. Everyone gets into their places, and Mr. Rutter had us pull out our music, and he started the orchestra. The entire room filled with the gorgeous sounds of the brass, woodwind, strings, and the heavy pounding of the percussion. We start to sing this glorious piece, and that feeling right then is one I will never forget. We all became so overwhelmed with the beauty of the music and it was simply a night to remember. This was the largest, most intense concert I have ever performed in. I got to have such an amazing experience on stage with such an amazing group of people in such a legendary venue, and it has given a whole different perspective on what making music really…

I attended The Works of Thomas Root on Tuesday, March 24th. It featured the Weber State University wind ensemble and symphonic band as well as the WSU Band Alumni. There were many pieces conducted and created by Thomas Root. Most pieces were still unpublished but they were wonderful nonetheless. He also had pieces that were dedicated to people that he had come to meet throughout his life, and a piece was dedicated to his own mother.…

The concert was somewhat as I expected to be. The concert was so formal and organized. . Even though I had some prejudgments about the concert at first, I enjoyed listening to these pieces live. I will try to attend future classical music concerts. There were some parts where the management team could have done better. The artist demonstrated dynamics, technique, harmony and togetherness beautifully. Before leaving the concert hall I was able to speak briefly with some of the musicians, they were very helpful in answering my questions about the…

On Sunday April 7 , 2013 I attended the Junior Recital for Michelle Ellison (soprano) and Rachel Stanton (piano) at Oberlin College & Conservatory. Coming to my second show at Oberlin College I really didn’t know what to expect this time around. On this nice day at Oberlin College I observed many students outside playing their instruments and various groups outside singing in circles enjoying the weather. I could tell that these students were very passionate about music. Inside of the conservatory building the recital was held inside of the Kulas Recital Hall. This was my first time entering a room that was made specifically for musical recitals. The hall wasn’t too big but it was large enough to fit a nice sized crowd in a narrow room.…
