How To Write A Demeter's Brief Summary
Demeter’s Grief I am the Goddess of harvest and agriculture; all those who worship me call me Demeter. My story begins with me having only one child, and it is my dearest daughter, Persephone. She is beautiful, kind, and also the daughter of my brother Zeus, I care about her the most. Persephone has always been delightful being around, she is all joyful and full of warm smiles. But then one morning, she went out to the fields to gather some flowers like she would do. As time passes, she has not come back from the fields. I begin to worry as the hour’s pass by thinking why she is taking so long. But I am certain that she takes her time to gaze upon the ravishing flowers. Later in the morning, I hear an echoing cry from the mountains, the voice had seemed to belong to Persephone. I rush and sped out to search for her down on earth; I roam all around, I start to panic and wonder if I will be able to find her. My tears start to roll down on my cheek as I yell out for Persephone, she was nowhere in sight.

Strolling down the field of long columns engulfed in rows of wheat and barley occupied my day. The rays of the bright and scorching sun permeated the Greek sky. I remember the cultivation of crops that takes place year around, and the garnering of those crops that diminish the array of produce that span for miles along the vastness of the field. An unexpected cool stream of breeze rustles my brands of immaculate, blond hair. Being the goddess of agriculture, it is my duty to be at the helm of the cultivating and harvesting process that constitute my yearly routine.…

After losing a loved one, one may feel as if one is stumbling through an infinite darkness. No one is more familiar with this feeling than the mother; every mother must deal with the loss of losing her daughter. After years of caring and loving for their daughters, mothers must ultimately loosen the bonds of love and allow their daughters to explore the world for themselves. However, unlike other mothers, Ceres is forced to let go of her daughter Persephone prematurely, because Persephone is abducted by Hades. Ceres tries to take her beloved daughter back by blackmailing Zeus with an eternal winter; indeed for Ceres, it certainly puts the world in her shoes. The world seems all the more foul when it is rejoicing at a time of one’s grief. Ceres’ winter is solid and cold; this may demonstrate to why there are shorter days and longer nights in the winter. However, her winter is betrayed by time itself. Ceres must “wake slowly,” and learn to face her loss, no matter how painful, because “a summer day is beginning,” and time stops for no one.…

Demeter was unaware of the events that took place in her daughter’s abduction and was oblivious to the people who had helped carry out the plan. She knew that Hades wanted her beloved daughter’s hand in marriage, but she rejected his offer and said that he hadn’t the slightest chance (Persephone, Queen of the Underworld 1). When Hades eventually had his way, Demeter absolutely lost it. She neglected her responsibilities, and consequently, all crops withered and died. With no crops on earth, Zeus feared that the human race would die out, so he begged her to restore life to the earth. Demeter was so determined to get Persephone back that she refused to do so until she had her precious child returned to her (U*X*L Encyclopedia of World Mythology 824). Helios, the sun god, sees everything, so he was responsible for telling Demeter what had happened to her daughter. He tried convincing the goddess that it wasn’t such a terrible thing for Persephone to be Queen of the Underworld, but Demeter didn’t comply. In an effort to please both Hades and Demeter, Zeus said that if it was proven that Persephone was there against her will, she would be allowed to return to her mother. Hades heard news of the deal, so he began to think of a scheme that would force Persephone to stay with him (Persephone, Queen of the Underworld…

One part of the myth is how Demeter reacts to losing Persephone. In the three versions, Demeter’s reaction is fairly similar. Obviously she is enraged and wants her daughter back, so she stopped the earth’s ability to produce grain or seed. In one version, Laura Strong states that Demeter is consumed by depression and essentially forgets about her worldly duties. This could symbolize the relationship between a mother and her child in the way that a mother will postpone her duties as a person (or goddess) to care for her child. As for the original…
