before third grade. By the end of that school year, I was in the top reading level of my grade. In addition, I received a President’s Education Award for the achievement of significant improvement in reading and writing. At a young age, I learned the importance of time and effort in order to succeed. Furthermore, I regained confidence in myself from exceeding in mathematics. While living in Japan, I struggled with the fast-paced class and I was the slowest to solve mathematical problems. These experiences lead me to be reluctant with my answers. After moving to America, everything changed; I became the top student in class, especially in mathematics. This sensation brought confidence in my skill and the love for this subject. I recently received the Mines Medal of Achievement in Math and Science award that is given to one Junior in high school who excels in those subjects. Finally being able to exceed at something increased my self-confidence. In addition, while living in both of my parents’ homelands, I discovered to embrace who I am.
Fitting in as a child was difficult; moreover, stereotypes overwhelmed me and I lost my identity. Living in the two countries made me realize that no matter where I go, I will always be different. Rather than being negative of this situation, I started to accept it, ultimately boosting my self-confidence further. A couple years after moving to America, I learned the meaning of courage. American society heavily emphasizes people to voice their opinion, where as Japanese society is the opposite. Growing up in the states, I learned to stand up for what I believe in. In middle school, I gave a talk about obesity and ways to avoid or fix the problem in a speech competition. With the determination that I had, I was able to become second in state. I transitioned from the quiet girl I once was, to a woman who lets her voice be heard. One life-changing experience shaped me into a woman who I am today: persevering, courageous, and confident. Incidentally, the momentous change provided me with obstacles, teaching me substantial lessons that I value today. From putting in time and effort for success, to embracing who I am. These lessons will guide me to become a better being as well as influence others along the
way.
