This was very evident when I started kindergarten. I vividly remember there were different groups within our kindergarten class. The Blue Birds were the weak readers, Yellow Birds were mediocre, and the Red Birds were the strongest readers. When I started kindergarten I was an emerging reader but that soon changed. At the end of each day, my kindergarten teacher would play phonics records for us so that we could learn to blend sounds. This was my favorite part of the day. I wanted so badly to know how to read. I would practice over and over again until finally - I got it. I was one of the first readers in my class. I would read any and everything that was given to me. This continued throughout my school years. I would excel in all reading classes such as history and language. However, I was very weak in math. My favorite teacher was my high school English teacher, Ms. Irena L. King. In tenth grade she not only introduced me to Shakespeare and poets such as Langston Hughes (who would become my son's name sake), but she also taught me how to correctly structure an essay. These lessons would become lifelong assets and follow me throughout adulthood. For this, I am forever
