At first I was distracted by all the bright colors because I was only seven or eight years old but the second Percy Jackson Trailer started I was immediately drawn in. That night when I got home I immediately asked my mom could I have a little bit of money so that I can buy this book.Immediately when I got to school the next day I ran in and bought this book. When I got home, I sat down and read it for what seemed like hours. Before I knew it I was on to the last book in the series. The Percy Jackson books are about Greek mythology, and mythology is actually one of my favorite kinds of literature. This book series is kind of like a dream come true and it also inspired me to look into Greek history a little bit more, which showed me amazing books such as The Iliad or Odyssey which I read later in my life. The author of this book series, Rick Riordan, also wrote other series of books about other kinds of Mythology like Roman, Egyptian, and Norse. The section of school that hates him isn’t the old home of the series’ big evil, but the most competitive section of students, the children of the God of War, Ares. And instead of Quidditch, Percy finds himself participating in a chariot race. The world of The Lightning Thief brings Greek mythology into the modern world. Who knew that Mount Olympus was located on floor 1000 of the Empire State Building? Or that the Greek gods are responsible for the spread of Western civilization? Unbeknownst to us, we walk among monsters who scour the Earth hoping to find the children of Gods before the Gods do in order to eliminate their competition.…

I would be assigned books that would put me to sleep like Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry because it would have no action that I enjoyed. That’s when eighth grade happened. I saw this smart kid reading a book with a bland red cover with the title I am Number Four. At first I thought it was too advanced and boring so I didn’t bother reading it. Until that summer I went to the library and saw the book under the “Most Read” section and I gave it a shot. I could see why that kid wouldn’t put that book down during class. It made me feel so many emotions I’ve never felt before over a book and I couldn’t stop reading the series, again I wouldn’t do my homework and my parents would get mad because I would read too much for once! I have recently just finished all the books in the series up to this point and I’m waiting to get my hands on the one that just recently came out. I have read this series several times because I just thought it was so…

I read it whenever I got the chance. Day and night. The story had come alive and dragged me into it. When I read, I experienced a feeling I had never felt. Everytime I read a chapter from the book, it drawed me in more. I traveled into the book and soon it became a part of me. One day it was Chapter 13 and the next it was Chapter 21. There was no stopping me as I read and read and read. I began to talk to my friends about it and they recommended other books for me to read. I finished the first book, then I read the second, “Catching Fire,” and lastly I read “Mockingjay”. This was the best book series I had ever read in all of my eleven years of being on earth. My brain began to beg me for more reading material as time grew on. Reading began to teach me new things that I hadn’t known before. As my thirst for reading grew, I felt like I was becoming smarter as well. How could a book change so much of a person in so little…

They never asked me what do I want to read about or what I want to learn about until my 7th grade year when we had to read a book, take a test on it, and then write a book report on it. When I was listening to my teacher describe the assignment I was waiting for the circumstances. Then she said anything we want to read and do a book report on. I was dumbfounded when I went to the library because I had no idea on where to start. So I just started going to random areas of the library and seeing anything that just popped out at me and begged me to read it. Finally one did, and to this day still my favorite book I have ever read, “Iron Marshall” by Louis L’Amour. I fell in love with this book. I read it every night before I went to sleep and every day during school when I had down time during class. What drew me in was that there was action in every chapter and the story was in such good detail. I now know the saying that the book is better than the movie. And it is all because of “Iron Marshall”. After reading that book I had to see what else Louis L’Amour had because of how much I fell in love with the first one. Oh he did and to my surprise I can’t pick a favorite one! I read every single book he had in the library by the end of my sophomore year in high…

For the first time in my entire life I was understanding in a new level what was happening in the book. I was playing the scenes out in my head and actually enjoying the read. I saw the horse running through the fields, big and muscular. I imagined a below average size boy taming and training the ginormous creature. It all finally came together. I was overjoyed at the end of the book and I was ready for another exhilarating read. After this it took me a while to find another book that could match up to the previous one. My memory of my how I became literate is and always will be a part of me that I will never forget. I suppose I heard the sounds around me and connected them with emotions. Crying, I noticed, got a quick response from my parents, and usually some food. My communication development was identical to every other child learning to talk. Listening. But everyone has a story behind their literacy. Mine was one day, when we were driving to the grocery store, with the radio turned on, my jam turned on. It was the ABC’s. This song was unexpected, not only because of its difference in the nature of the regular pop songs, but that it was a new song altogether. Nonetheless, I began to rock along with the catchy tune of the song. I longed for more and demanded it…

Reading and writing was a very important part of my childhood experiences and memories. My mother was never a good reader and she consistently forced me to read the Sunday Gleaner to her every Sunday evening. At the age of nine, I was a very intelligent reader. However, I found difficulties reading the Bible and expressing myself through writing. At times I would cry because the other children at church would laugh at me. My church, high school and family have paved the way for me to achieve my goals of becoming a student at the University of the West Indies majoring in Psychology.…
